Monteverdi’s Catholicism Test Gets High Marks
[…] his notes as “the most directly personal and touching moment of the work.” It was indeed the most affecting portion of the concert, unless that occurred with the following antiphon, “Ecce Maria,” which was chanted by several of the men standing in the center aisle, effectively within the audience. One of the controversies involving Monteverdi’s Vespers concerns the pitch of the psalm “Lauda Jerusalem.” The lower level adopted here made it possible for mezzos Luthien Brackett and Virginia Warnken to take the top vocal parts, echoing each other perfectly from opposite sides of the ensemble. Although voices are present in every number—indeed, Monteverdi left not a single purely instrumental composition—the Vespers includes a “Sonata sopra Sancta Maria ora pro nobis,” which is largely for the instrumental component of the ensemble.
