Another Church Boasts Two Organs

Beginning on the soft reed stops, it progressed to a tour of the gentler flues—the Clarabella (an 8’ harmonic flute) was especially delicious. Following some quasi-impressionist treatment of the chant, Porter entered a 6/8 rhythm and built to a climax in something of an homage to Maurice Duruflé. Thereafter, a smooth decrescendo led to an atmospheric ending. French composer Ermend Bonnal (1880-1944), something of an impressionist organ composer, deserves to be rediscovered. His output is significant, including an organ symphony, but he is represented on recital programs almost entirely by one work, La Vallée de Béhorléguy, au matin, admittedly, a luscious piece. Porter’s musical portrayal of Béhorléguy Valley in the morning made one want to go there. The Circa Is Coming to Town Again
With nary a dog and pony act or whitefaced clown, Circa’s 19 circassians (acrobats) will illustrate three Schostakovich string quartets at Schubert Theater this weekend . . . if you can believe it. Some may remember Circa’s dark and edgy appearance in 2012. This time their unlikely partners are four blindfolded members of the Quatuor Debussy. The acrobats promise to defy gravity with dangerous hand to hand stunts, including a woman walking on the heads of her male counterparts, and dropping into a full split with her feet on the heads of two men. They will also do some aerial stunts with ropes and satin. You can see a short trailer of the performances here . Classical music: The Madison Symphony Orchestra will present FREE organ concerts in Overture Hall on three Farmers’ Market Saturdays this summer. The first one is this Saturday, June 21, at 11 a.m. The two others are on July 19 and August 9.
By Jacob Stockinger The Madison Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will host FREE performances on the custom-built Overture Concert Organ (below top) during the Dane County Farmers’ Market (below bottom) on three Saturdays -– June 21, July 19, and Aug. 9 –- all at 11 a.m. The concerts will take place in Overture Hall, 201 State Street. NO tickets or reservations are needed for these 45-minute concerts featuring MSO organist and curator Samuel Hutchison, as well as guest organists Ahreum Han and Donald VerKuilen.
