Offenbach's La princesse de Trébizonde from Opera Rara performed with wit & style, you can't help but be drawn in & have as much fun as the performers
[…] a mad-cap farce. The work was premiered, in a two-act version, in Baden-Baden by a troupe that was effectively Offenbach's Bouffes-Parisiens company on holiday, then it was given its first Paris performance in a radically revised three-act version later that year. It was a success and revived several times during the 1870s. New Sussex Opera performed the work in 2021 [see my review].Until recently, a scholarly edition of the work has not been possible but now Jean-Christophe Keck has produced a new edition which forms the basis for this new recording of the work from Opera Rara. Paul Daniel conducts Offenbach's La princesse de Trébizonde with Anne-Catherine Gillet as Zanetta, Virginie Verrez as Prince Raphael, Antoinette Dennefeld as Regina, Katia Ledoux as Paola, Christophe Gay as Cabriolo, Josh Lovell as Prince Casimir, Christophe Mortagne as Tremolini and Loïc Félix as Sparadrap and the Lottery Director, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Opera Rara chorus. The plot […]

Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, directorI couldn't find the program notes on line, reading it in advance would have added to my appreciation of the performance.I was on a weekend trip to the area, and took the chance to visit the "new" Walt Disney Hall. I lived in the area for about a year in 2002, at that time LA Phil had their concerts at Dorothy Chandler. Construction of Disney Hall was ongoing while I visited LA Phil and LA Opera, but I don't remember seeing it. It opened around 2003, so it has been around for 20 years.Mahler's third symphony is his longest, I don't know what symphonies are […]

Les Salons en musique at the Institut Français being their 2022 season with a fascinating concert that blends old and new. On 17 February 2022, Ensemble Hope will be performing a programme that mixes Purcell, Bach, Handel, Satie, Falla, with Dorothea Hoffmann, Roger Steptoe, Gualtiero Dazzi, Frédéric Bousquet, Harmonice Mundi, J Horrocks , Jean-Michel Hasler, Marc Antoine Million, and Bruno Giner. What makes the trio fascinating, however, is their instrumental line up - Armelle Marq, soprano, Frédéric Bousquet, euphone, Marc Antoine Millon, bass euphone. A Euphone is a development of the glass harmonica and the ensemble uses a modern Titanium Euphone, but the promise also a Crystal Organ, and the Baschet sound sculptures. The 2022 series at the institute has a particular contemporary focus with music in the season by Arthur Sajas, Marc Antoine Millon, Dorothea Hofmann, Roger Steptoe, Gualtiero Dazzi, Frédéric Bousquet, Jean-Michel Hasler, Karol Beffa, Camille Pépin, Kaija Saariaho, Thomas Keck, Sofia Gubaidulina and Raphaël Imbert. For […]

Gustav Mahler: Symphony No.3 in D minor – Michelle DeYoung, Philharmonia Voices, Tiffin Boys' Choir, Philharmonia Orchestra, Esa-Pekka Salonen (HD 1080p)
Under the baton of the famous Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Philharmonia Voices (Ladies), the Tiffin Boys' Choir and the American mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung perform Gustav Mahler's Symphony No.3 in D minor. Recorded at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, London, on October 1, 2017.✻Gustav Mahler's monumental Third Symphony embraces heaven and Earth, nature and love. He deploys a huge orchestra, choirs and a solo singer to draw his listeners into a rich and compelling musical landscape. It's a work that means a lot to us at the Philharmonia Orchestra. Back in 1983, it was the first piece we played with an unknown young Finnish conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen. We hit it off straight away, and he's been our Principal Conductor since 2008.In October 2017, we returned to this epic piece with Esa-Pekka for Mahler 3: Live from London, a live stream project watched by an audience of 126,000 worldwide.Source: Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK)✻The Third […]
