Hollywood’s first oboe has died
[…] of false ego! I don’t know, he just didn’t have the ego a man with his talent should have had. He would play the piano for us, to show us how we should play his music, and he would make it sound like an orchestra! Such a talent! I liked Bernard Herrmann, too. He came to Warner’s for a film [The Wrong Man (1956)], but he usually worked over at Fox. And I liked Bernhard Kaun, who sometimes did ghostwriting for Max Steiner. Kaun wrote an oboe concerto for me, but I can’t find it anymore. Heinz Roemheld was another gifted musician, and he did quite a bit of ghostwriting, too. I also liked working for Daniele Amfitheatrof; he was a very gentle and undemanding composer. (Sighs) And then there was Dimitri Tiomkin. - Not one of your favorites, I take it. Well, he didn’t like women very much for […]

[…] of one of the concerts that I attended over the weekend of Dec 20-21, 2014 ! .. following is that “missed” blog Report : Naad Mudra Concert Dec 20-21 , 2014 at KHS ( Shakuntala Shetty Auditorioun ) December 20th, 2014 : Attended the concerts called “NaadMudra”,in memory of Pt Bhaskarbua Joshi this evening. Started off with Bhimpalas by Shrinivas Joshi , son of Pt Bhimsen Joshi. He concluded with a thumri in Khamaj “Kaun gali gayo shyam” The concert got better with Aparna Panshikar who presented “Shuddha Nat” a characteristic of Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. I found a lot of Kalyan – Bihag in this Nat. I had never heard a “Shuddha” Nat earlier, so may be I was associating the phrases with these known raags ! She concluded with a Mira Bhajan composed in “Purvi” thaat set to a special Tivara taal played by two tabla players. I […]

Concerts on Day 2 of SwarZankar Music Festival , opened by 6.30pm with Rahul Sharma presenting Charukeshi Aaalaap , Jod and Jhala … he continued with a Bandish in Teentaal. I was quite impressed by the way Mukundraj Dev accompanied on Tabla. His style of playing the Dagga has a good resonance (ghumaar) and sounded really good. It is possible that , because I am hearing him first time in Pune at Ramanbag in open air , he impressed me more. But I am quite certain that he sounded better than the routine bunch of Tabaljis that accompany routinely in Pune at Sawai and Ramanbag. Rahul Sharma concluded with a Mishra Pahadi Dhun that had overtures of folk tunes from Jammu , Kashmir and a mix flavor of many other raags including Kirwani. The featured artists of the day were the Pts Rajan-Sajan Mishra. Accompanied on Harmonium by Dr Arwind […]

My Sawai Report – Day 2 , Jan 2 , 2015 Day 2 of Sawai was brilliant ! Being a classical vocal fan , I personally enjoyed it the most. Starting with the Multani at around 3pm … the concerts went on with “Kaal-Samay anurup ” Raag rendition concluding with the Darbari Kanada , Bhairavi Thumri by 10.15 pm. .. 7 hours of feast of classical music and dance ! Two words that would be repeated in the report of Day 2 of Sawai , like a vaadi and samvaadi are “Brilliant” and “Mesmerizing” The day started at around 3pm with Dhananjay Hegde’s traditional Vilambit Multaani of Kirana Gharana , Gokul gaav kaa choraa barasane ki naar(गोकुल गांव का छोरा ). He continued with “Sundar Surajanavaa saai re” (सुंदर सुरजनवा साई रे ) in Madhyalay and the jod bandish in Drut , Nainan me aan baan (नैनन मी आन […]
