[…] yet. It will be held on 21-23 March 2013, taking advantage of the public holiday on Thursday and this year the festival celebrates the bi-centenary of Verdi’s birth. The line up features a large number of pianists, including Anneke Lamont, James Redfern, Laura Pauna, Willem de Beer, Peter Cartwright, Wessel van Wyk and Pieter Jacobs. Other artists include Magda de Vries (percussion), Sandile Mabaso (tenor), Wim Viljoen (organ), Jonathan Mayer (violin), Morne van Heerden (clarinet), Danie Verster (baritone), Kobus Malan (oboe), Richard Pantcheff (organ), Abraham Mennen (saxophone), Linette van der Merwe (mezzo-soprano) and Gerrit Roos (guitar). Learners in The Secret Garden, Festival of Fame February is an important month for movie lovers with the Acadamy Awards or Oscars beeing awarded. For the second time we had the Jozi Film Festival operating from various venues. I saw Orania and Fanie Fourie’s Lobola as part of this. I also saw Les Troyans and Maria Stuarda with South African, Elza van Heerden, in the role of Elizabeth from the Met Live series and The Magistrate from the UK’s National Theatre film programme at Cinema Nouveau, Rosebank. Andrea Bocelli’s first movie, Love in Portofino, also opened in time for a Valentine’s Day treat. First 2013 season for JPO begins ... with no guarantees there will be a second
[…] must say that I think the use of a locally based conductor for an entire season is a good thing for the orchestra and for audiences quite apart from the financial benefits of using locally based talent. It allows the orchestra to follow the lead of one person for a while, settling into a pattern and a style. This makes for more relaxed listening in the audience. The programme notes were by clarinettist, Morne van Heerden, very, very different in style from the ones audiences have grown accustomed to from first Rodney Trudgeon and later Paul Boekkooi, both of whom mixed an anecdotal style with musical analysis of what the audience can expect in the work itself expounded movement for movement.
