[…] already; perhaps it is time for a shift of emphasis. Again, we shall see. Conducting anything at all at Bayreuth is a difficult task indeed, even when familiar with the set-up, let alone when not—likewise even when it is a single evening’s work, rather than that of four. Cornelius Meister, who was due to conduct Tristan but now substitutes for Pietari Inkinen, made a better job of Das Rheingold than I have previously heard here (Sinopoli, Petrenko, Janowski). Peter Selwyn One of my local orchestras, the Lambeth Orchestra, is celebrating its 50th anniversary and will shortly be announcing its celebratory 2022/23 season. The orchestra, founded in 1972 and under the direction of Dr Christopher Fifield since 1982, is one of London's foremost amateur orchestras. But besides all this, there is other big news. Peter Selwyn has been appointed the orchestra's new principal conductor and he conducts the orchestra on 9 April 2022 in a programme that includes Dvorak's Symphonic Variations and RVW's A London Symphony and music by Ravel at All Saints' Church, West Dulwich. Peter Selwyn is a local boy and first heard the orchestra when he attended concerts with his parents. He has since gone on to be Kapellmeister and Head of Music at the Staatstheater Nürnberg as well as included three seasons at Bayreuth as assistant to Adam Fischer and Giuseppe Sinopoli. Most recently we heard Peter […]

Giuseppe Sinopoli specialized in romantic Italian opera starting with Verdi; decadent, late romantic blockbusters; and music of the Second Viennese School. At the time of his sudden death from a heart attack in 2001, he had recorded much of the repertoire most congenial to his abilities, and quite a bit besides. A true, self-conscious intellectual, […]
