Surprising, well, shocking news from the Boston Symphony Orchestra: President and CEO Gail Samuel, who had only joined the orchestra 18 months ago, has resigned, as of January 3, 2023. Or maybe "resigned," since the press release gives no reason and Samuel has given no reason. Also leaving is Asadour Santourian, whom Samuels hired as VP for the Tanglewood Music Center & Learning. (H/T David Allen for finding the info about Santourian.)What's shocking is that Samuel was a highly successful executive at the LA Philharmonic, serving under Deborah Borda, Simon Woods, and Chad Smith. After Woods left and Smith (also a highly successful exec) was appointing chief executive there, Samuel landed the BSO job upon Mark Volpe's retirement after 26 years. My money would be on "conflict with the board" as the reason for her departure, especially since Santourian is leaving simultaneously.Jeffrey Dunn, a member of the orchestra's Board of Advisors (not […]

Margot la Rouge and Le Villi, Opera Holland Park, 23 July 2022
[…] Auty might have graced any operatic stage. His marriage of vocal heft, lyricism, and command of detail fully complemented Duprels. Stephen Gadd’s performance as Anna’s father Guglielmo should also be commended. As so often at Holland Park, this was a fine company achievement. Indeed, I think it was worth drawing attention to the achievement of the greater team at Holland Park. From Director of Opera James Clutton down (not to forget recently departed colleague Michael Volpe), or perhaps better, from a committed team of volunteers up, this is a friendly, welcoming, high-achieving company, crucial both to this country’s operatic ecology, past, present, and future, and also playing its part in building a more sustainable theatre in the broader, ecological sense. Since the pandemic, OHP has taken still greater care to work in partnership with local suppliers; a wonderful array of upscaled furniture provides audience seating; the auditorium has been constructed […]

Adjustments
If Opera is a new company with a long history. Founded as Iford Arts, the company has reinvented itself since ceasing to perform at Iford Manor, where the company was founded. Since the beginning of this year, Michael Volpe has been chief executive, and the aim is to transform If Opera into a repertory opera company with a fixed group of singers, performing work in specially chosen venues across the South West. The company has not yet announced its plans for next year, but it has not been silent and a new film, Adjustments written by Nicola May-Taylor, directed by Harry Mackrill, is now available on the company's website. It is not an opera, and wisely doesn't try to be, instead May-Taylor's story explores the power of music's effect on grief and the grieving process. May-Taylor plays Maya, a sound engineer returning to work after the death of her father and whose life […]
