Premiere recordings abound on livewire soprano-composer Héloïse Werner’s new album of solos and duos; and the Danish String Quartet reach Prism IV • The point where language and music collide is an abiding preoccupation for the French-born, London-based Héloïse Werner, whose new solo album, Phrases (Delphian), displays her versatility as a singer and composer, but as musical catalyst too. The 12 tracks, mostly premiere recordings, include works by Elaine Mitchener (the sensuously surreal Whetdreem); Nico Muhly’s prayer-like Benedicite Recitation, with beautiful solo flute; Oliver Leith’s Yhyhyhyhyh, an exploration between voice and detuned cello; Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s tiny scena Something More Than mortal; and Josephine Stephenson’s hypnotic Comme l’espoir/you might all disappear, with guitar. Werner’s four songs (including Syncopate, with Zoë Martlew), from vocal acrobatics to verbal confession, and Récitations by the Greek experimental composer Georges Aperghis complete this distinctive album. Werner is joined by her first-rate regular collaborators: Colin Alexander (cello), Amy […]

Up Close and Musical: Shiry Rashkovsky's new festival aims to foster a deeper connection and understanding with what musicians do.
[…] August weekend begins with violinist Chloe Hanslip performing Bach, Biber and Ysaye, then after dinner there is Misha Mullov-Abbado and his jazz sextet performing some of his recent works. On Sunday, Jessica Duchen will be reading from her novel Immortal about the identity of the ‘Immortal Beloved’ of Ludwig van Beethoven’s love letter following the composer’s anniversary year. After dnner, soprano Heloise Werner will be performing solos from her new album, including Récitations by George Aperghis and a piece by Cheryl Frances-Hoad. There will also be the world premiere of Werner's new work, commissioned by Shiry, The Erl-King for soprano and viola which is inspired by Angela Carter’s reworking of the Erl-king fairy tale in The Bloody Chamber. Shiry and Heloise Werner will be recording this in August alongside an arrangement of Schubert's setting of Goethe's version of the tale, Erlkönig. Many of the artists are friends or people Shiry […]

Tally of performances attended in 2020
An odder year than ever before and, let us hope, than ever again. I heard no composer of opera more than once; there was no Fidelio, even in Beethoven's anniversary year. Beethoven would surely have emerged considerably further ahead had that year truly got going. As it was, he squeaked past Mozart in the concert tally, while the two composers both received eleven in the final reckoning. (As ever, this is scored per concert/event rather than per piece; i.e. Igor Levit playing four Beethoven sonatas in the same recital counts as one, not four.) Looked at another way, though, I still managed to hear music by a range of composers, from Abrahmsen to Zimmermann, a good number of contemporary composers amongst them. Concert Beethoven 11 Mozart 10 Bach 5 Haydn, Ravel, Stravinsky 3 Berg, Schumann, Bernd Alois Zimmermann 2 Hans Abrahamsen, Georges Aperghis, George Benjamin, Boulez, Brahms, Busoni, Isaac Cooper, Copland, […]

New music indeed, then, however distant 2018—Theresa May: remember her?—may seem to those of us bewildered and exhausted by the current plague. I hope I shall be forgiven for any errors I might make, confronted with such a wealth of new sounds and their organisation, without so much as a programme note, coronavirus precluding such, let alone a score. Is that not, however, […]
