Recent Releases No. 70 (CD Reviews)
[…] is not the lean and swift sort of Beethoven playing that we have come to hear more often owing to the many “historically informed performance” and/or “original instruments” Beethoven recordings in the marketplace. Ohlsson’s playing on his Steinway sounds rich and expressive, and the sound quality is on the warm and full side. It just all sounds, well, comfortable – and quite enjoyable for all that. My favorite sets of Beethoven piano concertos have been Fleisher/Szell/Cleveland and Bronfman/Zinman/Tonhalle Zurich. This new release from Reference Recordings supplants neither of those, but it is still worthy of consideration by those looking for an entertaining set of the Beethoven piano concertos. It's a first-class set both musically and sonically.

Is It Time for New Classic Recordings?
[…] wonderful and satisfying as those gems from the past. I yield to no one in my admiration for the achievements of legendary conductors, orchestras, chamber groups, and soloists from the time when I was a mere pup. But to suppose that their artistic achievements never will be equaled is a poor bet. Fritz ReinerSo by all means, check out the acknowledged masterworks from the heyday of analog stereo. You deserve to hear how Szell, Munch, Klemperer, and Mravinsky conducted** or how Rubinstein, Horowitz, and Fleisher played. I also admit, quite cheerfully, that some of my go-to recordings still are those classics, ones on which the virtues of the performance are so amazing that they outweigh any other considerations. But the number of those "matchless" classics keeps shrinking as I discover alternatives. For all of us, there should come a time when we start updating – or let's say […]

Breaking news - BBC Radio 3 does something right
[…] just one of several Dutch composers whose music is overlooked simply because it fails the box ticking test. Recently I highlighted the work of the sadly departed Wim Henderickx, and over the years the music of Lex van Delden (1919-1988) has been highlighted here. Lex van Delden's music first came to my attention in the 1970s through a performance by Bernard Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Other notable conductors who programmed his music were George Szell and Eugen Jochum. As I write Lex van Delden's Sinfonia No.3 'Facets' plays in the Etcetra recording by Haitink and the Concertgebouw, and it is very fine music indeed which just cries out to be heard. Here we have yet another richly talented composer condemned to box ticking obscurity, so kudos to Radio 3 for bringing his music to a wide audience. For readers who want to venture even further from today's social media-driven classical […]
