A Vast Obscurity: SongEasel bringings song celebrations to South East London including Gabriel Fauré's centenary
From April to June 2024, Jocelyn Freeman's SongEasel is celebrating a whole clutch of anniversaries in a series of concerts across South East London featuring performers including Roderick Williams, Mark Padmore and Elin Manahan Thomas. Spreading her net widely, a delighting in discovering that the word 'obscurity' can mean a collective noun for a group of poets, pianist Jocelyn Freeman's series A Vast Obscurity brings together the 460th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, the bicentenary of Lord Byron’s death and 65th birthday of Dr. Joseph Spence, plus Gabriel Fauré's centenary.Things commence on 11 April at St. George the Martyr, Borough with baritone Roderick Williams, pianist Iain Burnside and double bass player Leon Bosch in The Land of Lost Content with music by Butterworth, Burleigh, Clarke, Beach, and McLachlan. Gabriel Fauré's centenary is celebrated with a pair of concerts, the 1893 version of the Requiem with Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano), Malachy Frame (baritone) and The Corbett Consort at St Mark's Church, Kennington on 11 May, then Gwilym […]

New Jersey Symphony. Gemma New, conductor; George Li, piano. April 29, 2023.
[…] Other than that I didn't say anything about her conducting, one can take whatever from such silence. While this concert happened about a week ago, I remember one of the things I noted was this was an enjoyable concert. While my added understanding of the Rachmaninoff and Berlioz pieces no doubt played a role, New's interpretation of the pieces surely added a lot to how good the concert was. Contrast this with what I said about Manahan's and Jarvi's recent appearances, where I didn't say much about the conductors.New started the program by describing the Sarah Gibson piece. She used phrases like "a wall described by the same note," and "decorations." Much of modern music is so nebulous that the casual listener could use words like "trenches" and "graffiti" to describe the same music. At less than 15 minutes (time stamp of 8:19 pm when the piece was finished, and I […]

New Jersey Symphony. George Manahan, conductor; Awadagin Pratt, piano. November 20, 2022.
State Theatre New Jersey. Balcony (Seat F101, $57).ProgramSymphony No. 38 in D Major, K. 504 "Prague" (1786) by Mozart (1756-1791).Rounds for Piano and String Orchestra (2021-2022) by Montgomery (b. 1981).Suite from Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, Op. 60 by Strauss (1864-1949).Program for the afternoon. Lasted 1:45 hours, with intermission. As part of its Centennial celebration, NJ Symphony has invited back its past conductors to lead several concerts. I know Manahan from the days NYC Opera was still a functioning organization. Turns out he was NJS's interim director for the years 1983-1985, before I began attending NJS concerts regularly. The Prague symphony was written by Mozart when he was in Vienna. The Prague audience at that time was a lot more receptive than Mozart's home town, so the Symphony was premiered there, and hence its name. Symphonies No. 39-41 readily come to mind when one talks about Mozart, but the Prague can hold its own, with […]

[…] has written and the fact that he has always loved great melodies that stay in the mind. He also has a love of choral music, and this is one of the types of music he listens to. His first classical work was a Pie Jesu which came to him unbidden. Since then he has written choral music, instrumental music and songs, including the cycle Swansongs – Songs of Remembrance which was recorded by soprano Elin Manahan Thomas and pianist Daniel Grimwood for Signum Classics. His influences include the music of English composers such as Finzi and Bax, perhaps Elgar is rather less of an influence but there is also some Stanford in there. He also names the Californian composer Lou Harrison (1917-2003), particularly a disc recorded by pianist Joanna MacGregor, and adds that he is also a fan of John Adams' music too. He enjoys exploring different tunings, but this is […]
