What's not to love? Glamour and heart as Puccini's little swallow returns to Opera North
[…] with no weak links. Pasquale Orchard, Kathryn Sharpe and Laura Kelly-McInroy played a significant role in Act ONe as the three young women, Yvette, Bianca and Suzy, in Magda's salon, creating a lively and vividly engaging atmosphere, well supported by Ross McInroy, Satriya Krisna, Paul Gibson and Andrew Randall as their male counterparts. The full chorus only really came into its own in Act Two, here a vibrantly active depiction of Bullier;s with solos from Charlie Drummond, Molly Barker and Amy Freston. The chorus was in good form and whilst there were six dancers, everyone was on the moved. There was also small solos from Gillene Butterfield and James Davies.Conductor Kerem Hasan and the orchestra did the work proud, Hasan's way with the score meant we got a whole sequence of beautifully long-breathed, flexible melodies.No-one dies and there is no intense tragedy. Coronation chicken
Judith Weir, Tarik O'Regan, and Roxanna Panufnik are among the composers with commissions for the coronation of King Charles. I just hope they know what they have let themselves in for. The future King professes an enthusiasm for classical music, but this comes with strong views. Michael Tippett's Suite for the Birthday of Prince Charles was commissioned by the BBC in 1948 to celebrate the birth of the heir to the throne, and is undoubtedly the composers most tuneful work. But I am told by a major London orchestra manager who tried to programme the Suite for a concert in the royal presence that Charles hates the piece. In his autobiography the great arts visionary Sir John Drummond gave a candid view on Charles' tastes:"I have always found the Prince's lack of interest in anything to do with the arts in our time depressing, since all his opinions get so […]
