For Reginald, diversity means casting the net around Black, Queer, Women, Latino and Hispanic artists. There are plenty of such composers in the historical record, including Vincente Lusitano (16th century), Ignatius Sancho and Chevalier de St Georges (18th century), Esteban Salas y Castro (in 18th century Cuba), African-American songwriter James Bland (19th century), Samuel Coleridge Taylor, and many more. Casting the net so widely can make things difficult, but it is worth it. We need to grasp these composers and their music to understand society and their place in it.
