‘V’ is for Verdi: The Met Opera’s ‘Simon Boccanegra’ and ‘Otello’ — How the Mighty Have Fallen (Part Two)
[…] Iago, the ubiquitous Lučić. For all his skills and ability in this repertoire, Lučić does not sound like your standard Verdi baritone. He hits all the right notes, holds on to those high ones with vigor and heft, and even injects an equivalent degree of dramatic urgency to whatever he imparts. This is what may have saved the broadcast from complete and utter ruin. That, plus an intriguing last-minute substitution by debuting Italian tenor Francesco Anile as Otello, put this radio transmission on the radar. After the Act III ensemble, in which Otello flings his poor wife to the ground and practically accuses her of having an illicit affair with his former lieutenant, the disgraced Cassio, Antonenko , at the line, “L’anima mia, ti maledica!” (“Wife of my bosom, I curse thee!”), lost his voice. So little was left of his vocal apparatus that he barely got the words out. […]

Cuts like a knife
[…] tight, direct and deadly. Get out of its way and it runs like an unbraked jalopy on a downhill straightaway. Despite the update to Fellini’s 1950s, the presentation closely resembled my first Pagliacci, Frank Corsaro’s staging for the City Opera nearly fifty years ago. And why not? Do this shocker with decent singing and acting and it’s hard to beat. In any Pagliacci, Canio, an archetypal tenor lead, should have the standout performance, and Francesco Anile gave the most thrilling singing of the night. His yearning high phrases, his ill-repressed evolving rage held all attention. He makes one curious to hear his high, forceful voice in other roles. Michael Corvino’s Tonio was thoughtful, alive, expressive and funny, but there was no chance his rather grainy baritone would steal Canio’s thunder as a major voice often does—therefore, Canio did steal Tonio’s final line. Gustavo Feulien, the Silvio, was another voice one […]

The Italian tenor who made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera on a moment's notice last weekend - while still wearing a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers - got another chance in the spotlight Thursday night. Seasoned opera singer Francesco Anile, 54, got the call at around noon that he would be filling in for Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko in the title role for the full performance of Verdi's "Otello" because Antonenko is ill.

Aleksandrs Antonenko is ill and has withdrawn from singing the title role in tonight's Met Otello. He will be replaced by Francesco Anilo. Says the press release: Italian tenor Anile made a surprise Met debut during Saturday afternoon’s internationally broadcast performance of Otello, when Antonenko’s illness forced him to withdraw just before the final scene of the opera. The performance continued uninterrupted, with Anile singing the role from the wings while Antonenko acted it onstage. Tonight will be Anile’s first complete Met performance of the role.... Tonight’s performance of Otello is conducted by Adam Fischer and also stars Hibla Gerzmava as Desdemona, Alexey Dolgov as Cassio, Željko Lučić as Iago, and James Morris as Lodovico.
