Concerto delle donne II
[…] Gonzaga family. Laura received a good education in Latin and music, probably studying with the children of Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga, a big patron of arts and composer himself. Giaches de Wert was then the maestro di cappella in Mantua, so it’s likely that he heard the young Laura singing and maybe even taught her. Laura was also known as an exceptional harp player. It’s clear that by 1580 Peverara was already famous: the poet Muzio Manfredi dedicated a sonnet to her. Later that year a remarkable collection of sonnets and madrigals was dedicated to her; among the composers who wrote the music for this collection were such luminaries as Orlando di Lasso, Luca Marenzio, Claudio Merulo and Giovanni Gabrieli (in one of the sonnets Laura is praised as “the second, after Virgil, most famous citizen of Mantua”). Alfonoso II, Duke of Ferrara, visited Mantua in 1580 and, taken by Laura’s […]

The program recreates an evening in Tuscany, 1766, when these three played together with violinist Manfredi, “the best violinist in all Italy for orchestral and quartet playing,” according to a report by Cambini. The four gifted composers/string players, “The Tuscan Quartet” were long recognized as the first professional string quartet ever. Such an imaginative snapshot of string quartet performance history is the connecting theme for the entire 11th season of The New Esterhazy Quartet. In November, they present Vienna, 1784: Quartet Party at Storace, featuring Haydn, Mozart, and their contemporaries Ditters and Vanhal. In […]

Italian composer and violinist. His birthdate was supplied by Fétis, who mistakenly gave Cambini’s forenames as Giovanni Giuseppe (Jean-Joseph). Fétis also stated that he studied with Polli, who is otherwise unknown. Cambini’s own account (AMZ, vi) of his playing quartets as a young man with Manfredi, Nardini and Boccherini contains errors that raise questions about its validity, but it is likely that he worked with Manfredi. The tradition of his study with Padre Martini is doubtful, as is that of his personal contact with Haydn.
