Study in contrasts: in the same Wednesday I witnessed the presentation of two very different pianists: I have already reviewed Alexander Ullman´s refined Chopin at the Gran Rex, too big and matte a hall for him. And now, the comeback of veteran Argentine pianist Eduardo Delgado, for Chopiniana at the Palacio Paz, an artist of very powerful sound in a resonant small hall. Born in Rosario, the mere mention of his teachers reveals his generation, that of Argerich, a good friend of his: Vicente Scaramuzza here, Sergio Lorenzi in Venice, Rosina Lhevinne at the Juilliard. His career as a pianist has been chequered, but he has long been an esteemed teacher (twenty years at California´s State University, Fullerton) and member of the jury […]

A bedtime meeting of keyboard legends
Yesterday, Martha Argerich paid a courtesy visit in Buenos Aires to Elizabeth Westerkamp,a legendary piano teacher who studied with Vicente Scaramuzza. Argerich, along with Daniel Barenboim, Bruno Gelber and Sylvia Kersenbaum were also Scaramuzza pupils. Westerkamp, who is 100 years old, taught Ingrid Fliter and Federico Lechner, among others. The Buenos Aires piano school remains keenly productive. Dùo Isas-Kwiek , who took this beautiful picture, write: We were rather late and Westerkamp received us in bed with joy and intelligence as always. I share with you a photograph that allowed me to take that moment!

At that time she visited Buenos Aires in 1965 and I had the great pleasure of interviewing her; although she was shy and disliked talking about herself, she was pleasant and charming, and after an hour it seemed I had known her for years. She gave their due to her teachers (Scaramuzza, Gulda, Madeleine Lipatti) and in a very characteristic phrase she said that she played before older pianists (Stefan Askenase) but also of her own generation (Fou Ts´ong) because interpretations are always improved by the exchange of views with other pianists. Later, in June 1967, I had an informal chat over dinner with Argerich and […]
