Bird Charlie Parker Yardbird I still remember the first time I heard a recording by Charlie Parker. I was 15 years old and the band director at the school was going to teach us to play “Billie’s Bounce”, or at least the melody of the tune. I don’t know what I thought Jazz was before I heard that record, but my brain soon learned, once I listened to the alto saxophone of Charlie Parker. My ears could barely listen fast enough to hear what was happening, I simply could not imagine someone who could play like that, let alone improvise as he went along. Simply put, it was a musical epiphany. Charlie Parker, “Billie’s Bounce” That day set me on a listening quest that led me from Bird to Diz, Miles, Monk, Clifford Brown, Coltrane, and on and on. I bathed in bebop, tuned my radio to […]

Introducing Caribbean Classical Guitarist Hermelindo Ruiz Mestre
[…] are your favorite piece or pieces on the recording? My favorites are “Rosarito y Luis” and “Migda Enid”, they are both a lot of fun to play and I find them very interesting, especially because of their counterpoint. “Ojos de ensueño is another of my favorite ones. Through from discovering the pieces through to releasing the recording, what was your favorite element of the project? To work with incredible guitarist Steffen Besser (from Germany), Samuel Diz (from Spain), and Marco Sartor (from Uruguay). They are all superb musicians and each one taught me, in their way, an incredible amount of things. I loved every rehearsal, studio sections, and the memories I have from it. The other element was the excitement of getting into a music of which I could expect nothing, that sensation of discovering something new. Is there anything you would do differently in approaching a new project? I […]

Marrying music with photography
Occasionally, I get to watch and do two things I admire the most in my life, singing and photography, resepctively. If there was a way to merge the two I would do that but at the moment I am stuck between choosing one at a particular time. 2013 was a year for me that had a lot of challenges but needless to say, I prevailed. So as I was looking at some of my work in the year that just ended. Riddled with faults and mistakes that I was reminding myself never to repeat, I found myself loving some of the work that I did and in particular, Samuel Diz photo shoot. Samuel Diz plays classical guitar and is from Spain. His love for music is deeply embedded in his strum and pluck while his Byronic curls speaks a lot of a man who has very little time on anything else […]
