[…] a spreadsheet of their financial info for a completely different purpose; also, they're useful for comparison with the Met. SFS is my not-quite-local band (I live in Oakland), but they've been extremely well-managed. For your amusement: the highest-paid musician at the Met is not one of their two concertmasters. It's chorus master Donald Palumbo. The highest-paid musician at SFS is concertmaster Alexander Barantschik, which you certainly would expect. The second-highest- paid is principal oboe Eugene Izotov; after that, principal trombone Timothy Higgins and principal trumpet Mark Inouye. It will be interesting to see what kind of salaries the incoming, as-yet-unknown, principal cello and flute will be able to negotiate.

Holy Cow! MTT to Step Down in 2020
[…] in 1974, it was clear that his passion for the music was matched by his ability to communicate it profoundly with our audiences," said SFS cellist Margaret Tait. "His creative, personal approach to music making and the broadening of the repertoire have been embraced by the Orchestra and made these two decades exciting, rewarding, and inspiring." “Working with Michael has been one of the most joyful and meaningful collaborations of my life,” said Eugene Izotov, SFS Principal Oboe. “His inspiration, guidance, and spirit have raised the artistic level of this orchestra and shaped the San Francisco Symphony into the kind of ensemble it has never been before. Although he leaves his post as Music Director, I know that his passion, youthful energy, and endless musical curiosity are here to stay with us.” “Under Michael Tilson Thomas’ leadership, the worldwide artistic reputation of the Orchestra has experienced a trajectory of […]

[…] as the encore. ....and the real star, Shostakovich's huge Tenth Symphony, fabulously done. I don't know the piece at all and won't say much about the specifics, but you should go! Random observations: it is weird not to see Mark Volkert in the assistant principal violin chair. Carey Bell now has a goatee; Ed Stephan continues to amaze on the timpani; that must have been the new associate principal oboe, James Button, next to Eugene Izotov during the Shos and in first chair during the Mendelssohn. The program two weeks out is also a winner: Dvorak cello concert with Sol Gabetta, whom Joshua Kosman raved about after her solo recital some time ago, overture to The Magic Flute, and Lutoslawski's Concerto for Orchestra, a wild piece not heard nearly as often as its older brother by Bartok. Be there or be square.

Chicago principal trumpet to play next season with NY Phil
John von Rhein has the story here : Eugene Izotov, now principal oboe of the San Francisco Symphony, is no longer listed on the personnel page of the CSO program book, and his resignation has yet to be announced. Management has further declined comment on internal reports that CSO principal trumpet Christopher Martin will take a leave of absence next season to play first chair trumpet with the New York Philharmonic. Do such key personnel changes bother Muti? Do they threaten the orchestra’s musical identity and well-being? “Absolutely not,” he replied. “With all respect to Izotov, no player is indispensable in this orchestra. I spoke with Chris Martin today. He is very close to the Chicago Symphony but he wants another experience (away from the orchestra). So we shall see. Change is natural in symphony orchestras.’ photo: Todd Rosenberg
