Anglais - War Requiem: War as (only) pain and suffering
[…] succeeded quite well in this challenge and his proposal, which was premiered at the English National Opera in 2018, works well as a staged musical piece. Kramer, who has captured the essence of the score, leaves behind the military paraphernalia and the loud racket and, like the music, searches for introspection and the externally contained expression of the pain that burns inside. The contribution in the project of German conceptual artist and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans is fundamental in giving visual power to the performance through the video projection over three big screens. Finally, it is worth highlighting the choreography work of Ann Yee, who achieved to give dramatic meaning to the movement on stage of over a hundred people without turning it into chaos. The staged version of War Requiem, which will be preformed at Liceu until the beginning of November, is a performance of very high […]

In most concert performances the children’s chorus is placed offstage, perhaps high up in a gallery, but here the youngsters are on stage for the majority of the time that they sing. The presentation includes video designs by Wolfgang Tillmans so that the Dies Irae presents the remaining ‘courtyard’ of the old ruined Coventry Cathedral, where close-ups of stones reveal lichen growing and hence signify new life. In this way, although the War Requiem was always designed to see the traditional Latin Mass interact with Owen’s poetry, this staging appropriates even more of the former to address the subject of war. For example, here in Dies Irae the staging suggests that the ‘ashes’ and […]

Coliseum, London Superb soloists lift this over-busy English National Opera production, securely conducted by Martyn Brabbins and featuring scenery by Wolfgang Tillmans ‘I hope it’ll make people think a bit,” wrote Benjamin Britten of the War Requiem, the work that marked the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. Read his quote with a pause afterwards for the understatement to thud home. Love or hate the War Requiem, you can’t be unaffected by the way in which Britten’s music enables the collision of the Latin requiem mass with Wilfred Owen’s poetry. Even a bad performance makes you think. And this one, with the forces of English National Opera securely conducted by Martyn Brabbins, is a very long way from that. But whether the piece benefits from being staged is less certain, even after everything ENO’s artistic director Daniel Kramer and the Turner prize-winning photographer
