Breezes of Spain: discovering the music of Óscar de la Cinna
Óscar de la Cinna in 1875Pianist and composer Óscar de la Cinna (1836–1906) is not a household name. Born in Hungary, he was musically educated Prague, Warsaw and Vienna, studied with Czerny and was a classmate of Liszt. A virtuoso pianist, he moved to Spain as piano tutor to the Spanish Royal family, before finally settling in Andalucia. There he was influenced by Spanish folk songs and Moorish dance music. On Friday 29 March 2024, there is a chance to get to know Óscar de la Cinna's music when a piano and dance performance, Breezes of Spain (Brisas de España) is being presented at The Horton, the renovated Grade II-listed former Horton Chapel in Epsom that is now an arts venue. The performers are Yoel Vargas (dance and choreography) and José-Vicente Riquelme (piano), both of whom took part in the Horton's Spanish season last year. A Long Road of Remembrance and Hope
[…] Rose has been politically active since the 1970s in the struggles of the minority for acknowledgement and material compensation for the wrongs they have suffered. His significant successes include spearheading efforts that led the Federal Republic of Germany to officially recognize in 1982 the Nazi genocide of the Sinti and Roma as well as their acknowledgement of the German Sinti and Roma as a national minority in 1995. Just to put this into perspective, Italy, Spain and France still do not recognize the Roma as an ethnic national minority. Much has been accomplished, but much remains to be done. I first met Romani Rose in 2022 and dedicated O Lungo Drom to him. Please tell us about the work. O Lungo Drom, “the Long Road” in Romanes, is a large-scale work, scored for a chamber ensemble including soprano, baritone, flute, clarinet, cimbalom, piano and string quartet. It integrates texts from […]

[…] break loose, with 122 instrumentalists, 112 choristers, and 19 soloists. While the opera was full of many tremendous moments, two stood out: first, the scene in which Katerina and Sergei have sex for the first time. The music hit like a carnival, with atonal cadences and off-kilter beats that made the piece feel like the room was shaking. Act Two’s Passacaglia, a type of song structure with a strong base line originating from 17th century Spain, was the symphonic highlight of the evening. Building as a repeated scale but slipping between major and minor, the piece packed an emotional wallop because of the players' precision. The bass led into the brass resplendently and cascaded down together, reflecting Katerina’s descent into hell. Afterward, in addition to appreciating the sonic brilliance, the drag-along friends could not stop talking: “It felt like binging a Netflix miniseries” and “It was so good—I never thought […]

Threads of Gold: The National Centre for Early Music's Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival returns to the historic Yorkshire town
The National Centre for Early Music's Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival returns to the historic Yorkshire town from 24 to 26 May 20204 with a festival entitled Threads of Gold. There is something of a Spanish theme this year, as El Gran Teatro del Mundo, a young instrumental group based in Spain that captivated audiences on their UK tour last year and opens this year’s festival with Life is a Dream (la vida es sueño), a magical journey through the mysteries of the night, whilst The Telling close things with their music theatre show Into the Melting Pot which tells the stories of the women of medieval Spain thrust apart by religious intolerance. At Beverley Minster, the choir Tenebrae, appearing at the festival for the first time, perform their Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem – a masterpiece of the Spanish Golden Age. Other performers this year include the BBC New Generation Baroque Ensemble Augelletti, London Handel […]
