Virtuoso voices: Hilary Cronin and Hugh Cutting in motets by Handel and Vivaldi with London Handel Players
Palazzo Colonna in RomeThe Colonna family commissioned Handel's Saeviat tellus Handel: Saeviat tellus & Silete venti, Vivaldi: Stabat Mater - Hilary Cronin, Hugh Cutting, Katherina Sharman, Adrian Butterfield, London Handel Players; London Handel Festival at St John's Smith Square On Wednesday 14 April 2022, two London festivals came together when the London Handel Festival brought a programme of Baroque sacred music to St John's Smith Square's Easter Festival. Adrian Butterfield directed the London Handel Players from the violin in a programme bookended by a pair of Handel motets with soprano Hilary Cronin (winner of the 2021 London Handel Singing Competition), Saeviat tellus HWV240 (from 1707) and Silete venti HWV242, one of Handel's last works in the genre from 1724 which rather neatly it re-uses the final 'Alleluia' from Saeviat tellus. Fredell Lack, whose students included the current Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic, Frank Huang, has died at 95. A student of Ivan Galamian, Fredell won a bronze medal at the 1951 Reine Elisabeth competition and returned to form the Lyric Art Quartet. From 1959 she taught at the University of Houston. Among her students are: David Mazzeo, Pálína Árnadóttir, Joyce Hammann, Mariko Inaba, Anabel Ramirez, Gloria Justen, Sharman Plesner, William Pu, Gregory Ewer, Beverly Shin, Maurice Sklar, Martin Valdeschack, Chuong Vu, and Zuo Jun.

Opera and ballet talent recognised in Queen's Birthday Honours 2017

Photo by Frank Sharman A number of leading figures from the worlds of opera and ballet have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2017. Composer George Benjamin , who wrote the highly acclaimed opera Written on Skin and whose much-anticipated new piece Lessons in Love and Violence will have its UK premiere at Covent Garden next Season, has been awarded a knighthood. Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly becomes a Dame. Connolly made her Royal Opera debut in 2009 and has sung at Covent Garden many times since. She is particularly renowned for her performances of works by Wagner. Conductor Mark Elder becomes a Companion of Honour as does former Royal Ballet dancer Beryl Grey (pictured above).
