BSO Announces Subscription Season
[…] Andris Nelsons fill out his namesake cycle; some fine Haydn and Mozart to match Beethoven, one Schubert, the charming Rossinian Sixth Symphony; one Berlioz (Waverley); one Schumann (Piano Concerto with Jonathan Biss, welcome back!); and some lesser-known Russian works, including Rachmaninoff’s striking Symphony No. 3 (his best); and a lovely ancestor, The Enchanted Lake by Anatol Liadov. Among recently composed works, Tania León is back again with a new commission; Kevin Puts, Carlos Simon, Hannah Kendall, Chen Yi, Adolphus Hailstork, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Gabriela Ortíz likewise, mostly with topical or political pieces; and it’s good that there’s at least one Boston composer represented, Michael Gandolfi, with a work for organ and orchestra (heard here once before), paired with an old BSO favorite, the Saint-Saëns Third Symphony. From sound art in Middlesbrough & 2000 children in the Royal Albert Hall to Brett Dean's Cello Concerto & Brian Irvine's operas: The Ivors Classical Awards celebrating today's classical music

Josephine Stephenson was a first time winner for Comme l’espoir/you might all disappear for soprano and guitar in the Small Chamber Composition category. The work was commissioned and performed by soprano Héloïse Werner whom Stephenson in her acceptance speech described as a force of nature. Another first time winner was Hannah Kendall for shouting forever into the receiver for 17 musicians in the Large Ensemble Composition category. The work was commissioned by Donaueschinger Musiktage and performed by Ensemble Modern. Sparks flew as the creative arc of Paul Lewis’s Beethoven project connected with us. The October 19th evening program opened with an orchestral piece by the London native Hannah Kendall and started a three-day traversal of Beethoven concerti with another Brit at the keyboard.
