Two very different approaches to Bach's Goldberg Variations from harpsichordist Nathaniel Mander & violinist Jorge Jimenez
Nathaniel Mander with the harpsichord used for his recording of Bach's Goldberg VariationsJohann Sebastian Bach: Goldberg Variations; Nathaniel Mander; ICSM RecordsJohann Sebastian Bach, transcribed Jorge Jimenez: Goldberg Variations; Jorge Jimenez; Pan ClassicsTwo very different approaches to Bach's iconic variations, with a harpsichordist taking an admirably direct and musical approach, and a violinist channelling Bach's own writing for solo violinThere is something of a mystery at the heart of Bach's Goldberg Variations. They were the fourth volume of Bach's work to be published in 1741, under the soubriquet Clavierubung IV (Keyboard practice), though the name was the publishers, linking the volume to the previous three of Bach's that had been published during the 1730s. It can be seen as an educational demonstration of what a skilled craftsman might do with a theme. But there is also that story.Johann Nikolaus Forkel (1749-1818) in his biography of Bach (published in 1802) tells the […]

Language, Catalan culture & audience engagement: I chat to mezzo Marta Fontanals Simmons
Mozart: Die Zaubertflote - Marta Fontanals Simmons, Katie Stevenson, Katherine Crompton. Jonathan McGovernGarsington Opera 2018 (Photo Johan Persson) The mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons has been on my radar for some time. Whilst at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama she was Kate Julian in Britten's Owen Wingrave (2013) and sang the title role in Jonathan Dove's Pinocchio (2014), going on to be joint winner of the Guildhall School's Gold Medal in 2015, and our subsequent sightings of her have included Nigel Foster's London Song Festival. Other performances have included Kate Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly for Glyndebourne on Tour and for Grange Park Opera, Janacek's The Cunning Little Vixen at Glyndebourne and her Teatro Real, Madrid debut in Weill's Street Scene. At Garsington Opera this year she was of the Three Ladies in Mozart's Die Zauberflote. Marta Fontanals-Simmons This Autumn Marta is devoting to song, she will […]

Marta Fontanals-Simmons & Lorena Paz Nieto visit Spain in Oxford Lieder Festival's Grand Tour
Marta Fontanals-Simmons This year's Oxford Lieder Festival (12 - 27 October 2018) is taking us on The Grand Tour - A European Journey in Song. Whilst the festival will be including familiar masterpieces of the song repertoire, they will be heard alongside music which displays a range of cultural influence, from Finland to Spain, from Estonia to Poland. There will be a day long event focusing on Scandinavian song, lunchtime recitals including Polish, Hungarian and Italian song. A series of short language labs will introduce some of the European languages used in the songs. For example, I welcome the chance to get more to grips with Estonian before Estonian mezzo-soprano Kai Rüütel's recital with Roger Vignoles on 17 October 2018.A series of Spanish themed events on 18 October 2018 will be clustered around the evening recital by soprano Lorena Paz Nieto and mezzo-soprano Marta Fontanals-Simmons, accompanied by Sholto Kynoch, […]
