Premiere of Eleanor Alberga's piano concerto, commissioned by Royal Liverpool Philharmonic for Leeds Piano Competition winner Alim Beisembayev
Alim Beisembayev (Photo: Nabin Maharjan)Kazakhstan-born pianist Alim Beisembayev won First Prize at The Leeds International Piano Competition in September 2021, along with the medici.tv Audience Prize and a new prize, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society Prize for contemporary performance. This led the orchestra to commission a new work especially for Beisembayev, from the eminent Jamaican-born British composer, Eleanor Alberga, who will also be a Jury member of the 2024 Competition later this year.Alberga's Piano Concerto will be premiered by Alim Beisembayev with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Domingo Hindoyan on 25 April 2024 at the Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool as part of a concert that includes a suite from Roussel's Bacchus and Ariadne and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5.Alberga's concerto, her first piano concerto, has grown from solo works for piano and thematically draws on her life story. I chatted to Eleanor Alberga back in 2022 about her music and her Jamaican heritage, […]

Ash Wednesday and an opera about sex tourism. Whatever we might think about the latter two, many will agree that the coincidence is well deserved by the pseudo-feast of heart-shaped balloons and ‘special menus’ at three times the price, a third of the culinary quality. In retrospect, or rather more or less as soon as I had arrived, I could not help but […]

Total immersion: the Glasshouse's Big Bruckner Weekend features his final three symphonies, a mass, motets & more
Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia (Photo: Mark Savage)Next year is the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth, so expect plenty of celebrations of the composer's music, though the sheer scale of his symphonies makes anything like completeness difficult. The Glasshouse in Gateshead is having a Big Bruckner Weekend from 1 to 3 March 2024 offering audiences the opportunity to immerse themselves in final three symphonies, his motets, one of his masses and even his String Quintet.Across the weekend, Domingo Hindoyan conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in Bruckner’s Symphony No.7, Sir Mark Elder and The Hallé perform Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 and Alpesh Chauhan conducts the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner's unfinished Symphony No. 9. Thomas Zehetmair conducts the Royal Northern Sinfonia & chorus in Bruckner's Mass No. 3 with soloists Elizabeth Watts, Hannah Hipp, Thomas Atkins and Mark Stone, whilst throughout the weekend the chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia will be performing Bruckner's motets, […]

[…] Philharmonic had the opposite effect, a vivid, focused performance – not to mention a starry soloist – ensuring Chausson’s bittersweet song cycle held its own as a centrepiece. The Wagner came first, the undulating Prelude and ecstatic Liebestod embodying all of Tristan’s heady romance and revolutionary chromaticism despite omitting the three-and-a-half hours of opera usually heard in between. Perhaps keeping his – and the orchestra’s – powder dry for what was to follow, chief conductor Domingo Hindoyan’s reading was admirably clear, even translucent in parts, but occasionally stilted as well: bliss was approached, it seemed, but never quite attained, and at fortissimo moments risked slipping into bombast.
