2/17 Today in Weird Music History: 1947. The premiere of Aaron Copland’s Danzon Cubano, one in a line of Cuban-themed works by American composers. These pieces were largely inspired, not by immigrants, but by vacations. Until the 1959 revolution, Cuba was a popular vacation destination for Americans. Fascination with the island’s music led to a variety of works, from George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture to Desi Arnaz’s Babalu!
