Orford Church 11;10 am June 23 2014 The Lighthouse is just a few paces from the Aldeburgh Cinema where Humphrey Burton was introducing a terrific Britten BBC documentary - Britten on Camera. That was a huge pleasure - and reminded me of so many friends gone - young people who were in the Billy Budd recording of 1966. Delme Bryn Jones, Robert Tear, Michael Langdon - great people and great artists......and then some Owen Wingrave - dear John Shirley Quirk being the most recent loss. He was the Doctor and the Shepherd (off stage!) in the Pelleas at Glyndebourne my first year there in 1962...... And then to the evening show, an extraordinary recital by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Some Enchanted Evening with Bryn Terfel in Johannesburg
[…] commission by composer Paul Mealor, best known for composing music for the recent royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The new work is a tribute to Nelson Mandela, a three movement work, Spirit of Hope which includes the first ever setting of Mandela’s favourite poem, Invictus, by English poet William Ernest Henley. Bryn Terfel Jones hails from farming stock in North Wales and actually speaks Welsh. Because there is another Welsh baritone, Bryn Jones, Bryn Terfel chose to use his first two names as his professional name. Of course, Bryn Jones, is a very common name in Welsh circles (and my sister’s one brother-in-law is also Bryn Jones).
