Geh such dir die Stars vom vergangenen Jahr!
On Monday, the Met kicks off its 132nd season with a new production of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde by Mariusz Trelinski, with Sir Simon Rattle leading a premiere cast of Nina Stemme, Ekaterina Gubanova, Stuart Skelton, Evgeny Nikitin and René Pape (not pictured). Tristan has been the season-launching opera three times before now, but good luck finding someone to provide a firsthand account of the last time. Stemme and Skelton will follow in the footsteps of Flagstad and Melchior (1937), who followed Ternina and Van Dyck (1901), who followed Lehmann and Niemann (1887). Of these three illustrious pairings, that of Kirsten Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior is most familiar to us listeners of the 21st century. While Stemme and Skelton will be singing their roles at the Met for the first time, the Scandinavian Connection headlined 67 Met Tristans between 1935 and 1941, both at 39th and Broadway and on […]

Opera Favourites #2 - La giovane scuola
Some of the finest hours of the Italian melodramma are to be found in this post dedicated to the generation of the 1860s. This consistent group of composers were able to create a new style by evolving from Verdi's cumbersome yet inspiring heritage and in the meantime by fetching musical inputs from the sublime musical efforts of Wagner and from those of their own contemporaries, mainly Strauss, the French School and eventually Debussy and Ravel. The results were often outstanding, with the towering figure of Puccini surrounded by somewhat less charismatic and prolific personalities, yet very distinguished musicians like the many here presented. The Maestro from Lucca takes center stage, of course, and his many masterpieces like La Bohème, Tosca, Turandot or Il Trittico are popular milestones, combining a very distinctive melodic flair with outstanding musical and orchestrating skills. In all fairness, I've always believed that the true […]

Roma holiday
Manuel de Falla’s La Vida Breve makes its video debut with this release from C-Major which means there’s still plenty of opportunities for improvement. De Falla completed what is considered to be Spain’s national monument to opera when he was 28 years old in 1905. Its premiere took place, naturally, in Paris in 1913 after his gifts were championed by the likes of Ravel, Debussy and Dukas. With a performance time of a slim hour and twenty minutes it tells the story of the gypsy girl Salud who’s in love with Paco. He’s already betrothed to another of his class and even with his wedding day fast approaching, like in the very next scene, he’s still enjoying Salud’s favors. Her Grandmother and Uncle stand by commenting on the action, keening at Salud’s fate and hurling curses and oaths in Paco’s general direction. You don’t need to have seen the […]
