Winter into Spring: Oxford Lieder Festival's Spring weekend concludes
[…] that each singer can make very much their own. Tynan and Burnside definitely did that, gripping us with the story and delighting with the musical evocations of the text. Finally, clarinettist Julian Bliss joined Tynan and Burnside for Schubert's Der Hirt auf dem Felsen. The work was written for the soprano Anna Milder-Hauptman who wanted a large-scale showpiece, and Schubert responded (tardily, it has to be admitted) with a scene of almost operatic scale which Milder-Hauptmann premiered in 1830 two years after Schubert's death. Milder-Hauptman herself must have been quite a performer, she was Leonore in Beethoven's opera in 1804, and in 1805, and in the final version, Fidelio in 1806. Both Tynan and Bliss performed from memory which brought an additional level of intimacy to the piece, making it almost chamber music. Throughout their duettting was one of the delights of the performance. The first half was quite mystical, […]

Song recitals return to Wigmore Hall and BBC Radio 3, with Lucy Crowe and Anna Tilbrook celebrating the 20th anniversary of their partnership
[…] though the song is perhaps rather sophisticated considering Mignon is supposed to be 13, but that hardly matters in performances like this from Crowe and Tilbrook's fine partnership. Though we jumped only 50 years, we entered a different sound world with Berg's Seven Early Songs. Alban Berg (1885-1935) wrote the songs during his period of study with Arnold Schoenberg, and later edited them for publication in 1928. Berg set a variety of poets: Carl Hauptmann (1858–1921), Nikolaus Lenau, Theodor Storm (1817–1888), Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926), Johannes Schlaf (1862–1941), Otto Erich Hartleben (1864–1905), Paul Hohenberg (1885–1956). Throughout the songs, Crowe's plangent sense of line made a striking effect, surround often by the delicate filigree of Tilbrook's accompaniment. In 'Nacht' we really benefited from being able to see Crowe's highly expressive face, in the live stream, whilst 'Schilflied' was almost lyrical. Crowe's poised vocal line in 'Die Nachtigall' […]

Louise Kemény, Anna Milder-Hauptmann, Richard Mühlfeld and me - this Sunday at Conway Hall
This Sunday (8 April 2018) I will be giving the pre-concert talk at Conway Hall in advance of a concert where soprano Louise Kemény, clarinetist Max Welford, cellist Brian O'Kane and pianist Will Vann are performing an attractive programme of music ranging from Schubert's Der Hirt auf dem Felsen through Brahms' Clarinet trio to music Zemlinsky and Marx.My pre-concert talk picks up on the strong personalities running through the programme, soprano Anna Milder-Hauptmann, for whom Schubert wrote Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld whose clarinet playing brought Brahms out of retirement, Johannes Brahms himself who not only wrote four works for Mühlfeld but would be a keen supporter of the young Alexander Zemlinsky.Another character sits in the background, Zemlinsky would be linked to Schoenberg in a number of ways (marital ties as well as compositional links), and Schoenberg's ground-breaking Pierrot Lunaire would have an intriguing pre-figuring in Joseph […]
