A wondrous snapshot of British singing: Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music and the sixteen singers chosen for the first performance
[…] were dropped so there is a significant gap in Baillie's recorded output, whilst Walter Widdop's operatic recording career virtually stopped after the later 1930s.We have a selection of apposite operatic recordings, Eva Turner in 'Vissi d'arte' from Puccini's Tosca, Stiles-Allen in 'Santuzza's song' from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Frank Titterton and Heddle Nash in the duet, 'Ah, Mimi, tu piu non torni' from Puccini's La Boheme, Robert Easton and Heddle Nash in the duet 'Heavenly Vision' from Gounod's Faust, and Harold Williams in the Prologue from Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, as well as Margaret Balfour in the Angel's Farewell from Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius conducted by the composer. The remainder are song repertoire that veers between Victorian charm and the more contemporary, Isobel Baillie in the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria, Elsie Suddaby in Somervell's Shepherd's Cradle Song, Muriel Brunskill in Bantock's Serenade, Astra Desmond in the traditional Mull Fisher's Love Song, Mary Jarred in Parry's England, […]

Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center, NY; March 19, 2024—The Met has revived Bartlett Sher’s 1967 production of Gounod’s R&J hot on the heels of its new production of La forza del destino, and it has two hits on its hands. Everyone seems to agree that “Forza” is a problematic work–too many scene and locale changes, […]

Celebrating Lutheran Master’s 339th Birthday
[…] the Magnificat was once assumed to be his; however this attribution has since been overturned on stylistic grounds, and the work has joined the ranks of compositions by that most prolific of all composers, Anonymous. The Young People’s Concert is a recent addition to the day’s program, and a well-received one. This year’s 10:35am concert features youth from First Lutheran Church as well as several musicians from the Boston String Academy. The repertoire includes the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria performed on violin and harpsichord, Bach’s G major cello suite (with a different cellist playing each movement), and the famous Chaconne in d, arranged for string ensemble. The fact that this concert is so well-received each year is a testament to the enduring nature of Bach’s music, and it is always encouraging to see young people engaging with such brilliant music. The day concludes as it began, with organ music. The Vespers […]

Something a little bit special: David Butt Philip & friends gala for St Paul's Opera in Clapham
[…] real treat as David Butt Philip joined sopranos Alison Langer and Rainelle Krause, and baritone David Stout for a gala at St Paul's Church, Clapham in aid of St Paul's Opera.David Butt Philip is the patron of St Paul's Opera and this was the third such gala for them that he had organised. Accompanied by pianists George Ireland and Jo Ramadan, we were treated to a programme of arias, duets and scenes from Bizet's Carmen, Gounod's Faust, Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, Verdi's Don Carlo, Rigoletto and La traviata, Beethoven's Fidelio, Korngold's Die tote Stadt and Puccini's Turandot, along with items from Bernstein's West Side Story and Candide. All was sung from memory, and many of the excerpts were dramatic scenes rather than solo arias, thus making the evening a rather vivid one in the relatively intimate confines of St. Paul's Church.Rainelle Krause - St Paul's Church (Photo: Craig Fuller […]
