Vilde Frang: Nielsen and Tchaikovsky Violin Concertos
[…] recording is by Warner Classics.Unusually, I find myself in total agreement with Gramophone Collection's conclusions. (How on earth they could have published a survey by David Fanning of recordings of Nielsen's Fifth Symphony in their February 2019 issue without even mentioning Sakari Oramo's recording for BIS is quite beyond me.). On first hearing I wasn't sure about this performance but now I find it impossible to choose between the Frang/Jensen and the equally fine Cecilia Zilliacus/Blendulf on dB Productions, recorded in 2014, for the Nielsen concerto. I guess that the coupling might make the choice easier - the over-popular Tchaikovsky concerto for Frang and a selection of Nielsen's music for solo violin for Zilliacus. Zilliacus was Andrew Mellor's runner up.Frang is ably supported by the Danish orchestra and conductor Jensen in both the Nielsen and the equally fine performance of the Tchaikovsky concerto.Download from MEGA.

Cecilia Zilliacus (violin), Lena Willemark (voice) (BIS)The theories of Professor Helga Thoene about the influence of chorales on Bach’s famous Chaconne have been explored before on disc, by the pure-voiced Hilliard Ensemble on the 2001 ECM album Morimur. This is odder, wilder and more successful. Lena Willemark is a Swedish folk singer, and her chorales are a solo-voice wail, plangent and moving, that cuts across Cecilia Zilliacus’s admirable violin like an echo from a ritual past. Bach lies behind the other pieces: too literally in Svante Henryson’s Sonata, more subtly in Sven-David Sandström’s highly original Dansa, where voice and violin intertwine and for one movement a second violin joins the evocative texture with Bach quotations. […] Jarvi - a recording shared with DG.) BIS have, of course, more recently completed their series of the symphonies with Sakari Oramo conducting the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and that is probably the finest all-round series but I still like this recording of No.5 very much and the recorded sound remains outstanding. The performance of the Violin Concerto with Dong-Suk Kang is also very fine but can't match the recent Vilde Frang or Cecilia Zilliacus recordings. But in both works, as for Sibelius, the Gothenburg Symphony of the time are revealed as the ideal orchestra for Nielsen.
