Thoughts on Lohengrin
Judit Kutasi as OrtrudAct 2, LohengrinPhoto: Cory Weaver/San Francisco OperaSince the SFO Lohengrin opened, I've been thinking a fair amount about the opera and some of the details in; also, having the odd second thought about my review. I should have praised Simon O'Neill more than I did; he sang tirelessly and musically in a solid and Wagnerian-sized voice. I realize that I have internalized an ideal Lohengrin and he's not it.You will understand this when I mention that my previous three Lohengrins were:Ben Heppner, who had a great voice and was an excellent physical actor.Brandon Jovanovich, who has a beautiful voice, is tall and handsome, and has a natural and confident masculinity. Honestly, this makes him just the kind of guy I would want to turn up to defend me if I had been falsely accused of murdering my brother.Klaus Florian Vogt, who is handsome in a completely different way from […]

[…] is conducting Parsifal in Houston in January.Verdi TBD, conducted by Eun Sun Kim. Maybe next season we will get Ernani, which was cancelled owing to the pandemic. My personal hope is for I Vespri Siciliani / Les Vepres Sicilienne, which I've never seen.Puccini, La Boheme. At the opening night gala for 2022-23, Matthew Shilvock slipped in the news that Pene Pati would be singing Rodolfo here soon. Pati is singing Nemorino in 23-24, so maybe next year.Samson et Dalilah, Brandon Jovanovich as Samson. Given when I heard about this, maybe in 2023-24 or the season after. Obviously not in 2023-24.Madame White Snake, by Zhou Long. A friend spotted "this will be done at SFO in 2023" in the composer's bio in a San Francisco Symphony program. I asked SFO about it and the response was "San Francisco Opera has not made any announcement about this." Well, I knew that, and would bet that the composer's […]

Madama Butterfly, San Francisco Opera
[…] thing I scratched my head about was Cio-Cio-San's knee-length dress? slip? that she's wearing through a lot of Acts 2 and 3. What the actual: I am not an expert in women's turn-of-the-20th-century undergarments, but I know enough that the outfit registered as wrong.I'll probably go another 15 years before I see Butterfly again. I'm sorry to have missed Liana Haroutounian in the title role, but the December, 2007 noon matinee with Patricia Racette and Brandon Jovanovich, cond. Donald Runnicles, was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen of anything. I dug up Joshua Kosman's review and was relieved to see that I hadn't misremembered it.Lastly, no amount of concept is going to fix the awfulness of the libretto: child sex trafficking (she's FIFTEEN and it's clear from the libretto that he BUYS her); fake marriage; abandonment; stealing the kid. What, you think he'll have a rough time in […]
