THE KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing a number of concerts at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. At 6 pm on July 4, the orchestra will present a Symphony Concert, conducted by Bernhard Gueller and featuring soloist, Joanna Franklin (violin), in the Guy Butler Theatre at Monument. The programme includes: Hendrik Hofmeyr’s Preludio e Umsindo; Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35; and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8, in G major, Op. 88. Tickets range from R70 to R100. At 2 pm and 7.30 pm on July 5, in the Guy Butler Theatre, the orchestra will present The (He)art of the Matter. The concert will be conducted by Richard Cock and features soloists, Magdalene Minnaar (soprano), Timothy Moloi (tenor) and Nicholas Nicolaidis (tenor). Rachmaninov and Chopin: Cello Sonatas Denise Djokic is a Canadian cellist. She has appeared as soloist with many Canadian and US orchestras. It is always great to feature relatively unknown artists, to show you their capabilities. On this CD, Ms. Djokic offers the following program: Chopin: Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65 Rachmaninov: Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19 Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14 Performed by Denise Djokic (cello), and David Jalbert (piano) Denise Djokic has appeared with the Toronto Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Portland Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Mexico City’s Orquesta Filharmonica UNAM, as well as the symphony orchestras of Vancouver, Omaha, Montreal, Winnipeg, Syracuse, Santa Cruz, Brazil’s Amazonas Philharmonic, and many others. As TSYO Conductor, Shalom Bard will lead the TSYO in each of their three concerts, direct an intensive rehearsal weekend, and lead all rehearsals, mentoring the musicians of the TSYO. Prior to his position with the TSO, Israeli-born Canadian Shalom Bard was Resident Conductor of Symphony Nova Scotia during the 2011–2012 season under the mentorship of Maestro Bernhard Gueller. Previous appointments include Assistant Conductor for Educational Concerts with the Herbert Zipper Orchestra of Los Angeles, and Conductor of the Mooredale Youth Orchestra in Toronto.
