Still encouraging us to listen in new ways: O/Modernt Festival celebrates its 10th anniversary with a festival live and on-line

Next came Alma mia by Maria Grever (1885-1951), the first female Mexican composer to achieve international acclaim and best known for the song What a difference a day makes. Alma mia felt very earthy and Latin American, with jazz-inspired string figurations around Luciana Mancini's husky voice. Finally in this group, the Swedish premiere of Summer Dreams by Latvian composer Arturs Maskats. (born 1957). This sets poetry by Emily Dickinson, but the combination of Maskats approach to the text with the Luciana Mancini intoning the words against instrumental figurations, and the singer's diction meant that Dickinson's poetry was rather underplayed. Why Opera Europa's Platform matters

Kullervo is being performed at the BBC Proms this year, and also at the Edinburgh International Festival, but I think we can be pretty safe saying that this innovative, creative Kullervo will be the best of the lot. Saraste conducts, also a plus. To come : Valentina by Arrturs Maskats from Opera Riga, Götterdämmerung from the Vienna State Opera (Simon Rattle), Die Entführung aus dem Serail from Aix-en-Provence, features on Pesaro and Aldeburgh, on Den Norske Opera and on Teatro Regio Torino. Although the Opera Platform isn't big enough to compete with Medici.tv, it's a good, new platform (literally) for promoting European opera, particularly from smaller houses which might not have the resources to do so on their own. The website is being offered by the EU’s Creative Europe programme in collaboration with Opera Europa, which is an association of 155 opera companies and festivals, the cultural channel Arte and the 15 opera companies. Future productions include Karol Szymanowski’s Krol Roger (King Roger) from Covent Garden in London and Richard Wagner’s Gotterdammerung from the Vienna Staatsoper. Also on tap are Jean Sibelius’s Kullervo from the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Arturs Maskats’s Valentina by the Latvian National Opera in Riga and Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio, from the Aix-en-Provence festival in France.
