Claude Debussy: Les Trois Sonates (The Late Works) – Isabelle Faust, Alexander Melnikov, Jean-Guihen Queyras, Javier Perianes, Xavier de Maistre, Antoine Tamestit, Magali Mosnier, Tanguy de Williencourt (Audio video)
[…] grief of the opening movement with understated wit in the Sérénade and nervous energy in the finale. Tanguy de Williencourt, meanwhile, binds the disc together with the four piano pieces, played with admirable restraint and quiet, if unsparing intensity. Listen to it in a single sitting, and in the right playing order: it's extraordinarily moving.Source: Tim Ashley (gramophone.co.uk)Claude Debussy (1862-1918)Les Trois Sonates(The Late Works)1. Nabucco with Plácido Domingo - Royal Opera House
Plácido Domingo's London debut as Nabucco at the Royal Opera House was received with rapture. Domingo's position in opera is immense. His very presence comes over so well that any performance feels like a historic event. He is a marvel. If Domingo was singing Plácido Domingo rather than Nabucco, it hardly mattered. He delivered the big areas well, and was particularly impressive in the typically Verdian dialogues between father and daughter. Domingo isn't a singer who needs Personenregie. He is simply himself and that's enough. Earlier in the run, the role was taken by Leo Nucci. Domingo and Nucci are almost exactly the same age, but Nucci has been singing Nabucco most of his career. Domingo's voice may be more rounded, but Nucci understand the extremes in the part, and how to express the darker sides of character. Domingo sang Nabucco. Nucci "was" Nabucco, carrying the whole performance […]

Verdi Nabucco Royal Opera House
"Gli arredi festivi giù cadano infranti, Il popol di Giuda di lutto s'ammanti!". Verdi's Nabucco at the Royal Opera House respected the spirit of the opera. The people of Judah are in mourning. The Overture is heard against a simple backdrop, focussing attention on the music, and not on the "false idols" of decorative frippery. In this time of crisis, the people concentrate on the fundmentals of their religion. In this production, we concentrate on the fundamentals of the opera : on Verdi, and on his music. We listen to the orchestra, contemplating what the Temple means. When the chorus gathers and bursts into song, the impact is explosive. This production, a joint venture between the Royal Opera House and Teatro alla Scala Milan, is strikingly perceptive in musical terms. This staging takes its cue from the invisible images in the orchestration. Daniele Abbado, the director, observes how […]
