Sarojini: a new work by Shruthi Rajasekar celebrating Indian Independence
Sarojini Naidu on a 1964 Indian stampThis year is the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, and in honour of this the Hertfordshire Chorus will be premiering a new work by Indian-American composer Shruthi Rajasekar, Sarojini, which will be performed alongside Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man at St Albans Cathedral on 22 October 2022, with David Temple conducting the Hertfordshire Chorus, London Orchestra da Camera, Ana Beard Fernandez (soprano), Osama Kiwan (muezzin), Nirmala Rajasekar (veena - a long-necked, pear-shaped lute - & voice), and Tanjore Murugaboopathi (mridangam - a double-sided drum).Rajasekar creates music that draws from her unique background in the Carnatic (South Indian classical) and Western classical idioms. Her new work, Sarojini is written for chorus, orchestra and Indian classical instruments and her guru and mother, Nirmala Rajasekar, will be one of the premiere's performers. Bach Inspired: Mark Austin on the Bach Choir's project for six new works inspired by the St Matthew Passion

He uses rippling piano chords and a lyrical cello melody to conjure up wafting air, set alongside a hymn-like texture in the choir tinged with mysterious harmonies and powerfully expressive dynamics. Des Oliver takes the idea of God as a permanent, comforting presence. He visualises this as a mystical landscape, setting a poem by Sarojini Naidu, an important figure in the Indian civil rights movement. A truly cross-cultural work, it is as if Bach’s music from 18th century Leipzig reaches out to 20th century India, and these two epochs return hand-in-hand to 21st century Britain. Hypnotic patterns and melodies swirl out from the bass, inducing a trance-like state in the listener. AKHTARI BAI FAIZABADI a.k.a. BEGUM AKHTAR (7/10/1914—30/10/1974) was a well-known Indian singer of GHAZAL, DADRA & THUMRI. She received the SANGEET NATAK AKADEMI AWARD for vocal music and was awarded PADMA SHRI and PADMA BHUSHAN (posthumously) by the Government of India. She was given the title of MALLIKA-e-GHAZAL (Queen of Ghazals) She was active from 1929-1974. She was barely seven. when she was captivated by the music of CHANDRA BAI, an artist attached to a touring theatre group. At her uncle’s insistence, she was sent to train under USTAD IMDAD KHAN, the great sarangi exponent from Patna, and later under ATA MOHAMMED KHAN of Patiala. Later, she travelled to Calcutta with her mother and learnt music fro stalwarts like Mohammed Khan, Abdul Wahid Khan of Lahore, and finally she became the disciple of Ustad Jhande Khan.
