Terrific sense of achievement: Bach's St Matthew Passion from Scherzo Ensemble, The Strand Consort, Mozaique Baroque Ensemble and a team of young soloists
[…] dich' featured an elegantly expressive solo from the leader of orchestra 1 and Hegele's singing was poised and mellow, with shapely phrases and a sense of slow build to the aria. Her final aria, with a pair of oboes to the fore, was strong in tone and texture. The two women blended beautifully for their duet at the end of Part One, poised yet moving and contrasting finely with violence of the chorus. Last weekend (29 to 31 January 2021) was the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch. Pianist Matthew Schellhorn created this lovely video for it, in collaboration with young artists who created images of Robins. Schellhorn plays Olivier Messiaen's Le Rouge-gorge (Robin) with images created by pupils of Myatt Garden Primary School. Olivier Messiaen (1908–92) wrote numerous pieces inspired by birdsong. Le Rouge-gorge comes from a collection written in 1985 called Petites esquisses d’oiseaux (Small Bird Sketches) and apart from the Robin features the Blackbird, the Song Thrush and the Skylark. The work was dedicated to the composer’s wife, Yvonne Loriod, with whom Matthew Schellhorn studied in Paris.
