JW3 celebrates its 10th anniversary with its first classical concert series
Founded in 2013, JW3, the Jewish Community Centre London, is celebrating its 10th anniversary as the only such public venue for Jewish arts, culture, learning and community of its kind in the country. The Classical Series, the venue's first classical concerts season has just been announced, curated by David Waterman (former cellist with the Endellion String Quartet) and taking place in JW3's 220-seater Howard Hall.Things kick off on 15 November with the Jerusalem Quartet in Mozart, Mendelssohn and Beethoven, then tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Mishka Rushdie Momen perform Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann's Dichterliebe including the extra four songs that Schumann removed from the cycle (12 December 2023).The first concert of the new year features the trio, Alasdair Beatson (piano), Sini Simonen (violin), and David Waterman (cello), in Beethoven, Bloch and Brahms. Boris Giltburg cr Sasha GusovThe Hallé like to bill each concert with a title these days: what good luck that this one was given that of the music played in its second half, Lutosławski’s Concerto for Orchestra, as the conductor, soloist and piano concerto originally advertised had all changed by the time it happened. So we had the chance to witness Alexandre Bloch’s debut with the orchestra. He’s no stranger to Manchester, though, having been a junior conducting fellow at the Royal Northern College of Music, after the Paris Conservatoire. He won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in 2012, and I remember his part in the 2013 Chester Festival, appearing with Manchester Camerata, which was followed by a move to the London Symphony Orchestra as assistant conductor. Barbican, LondonThe National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain played with virtuosity, panache and heartfelt enjoyment in a programme featuring Britten, Anna Clyne and Richard StraussTwo double bassists exchanged a grin as they landed a hefty pedal note at the bottom of a massive chord. One string principal nodded good luck to another ahead of an exposed solo. A clarinettist smiled appreciatively, listening to a passage played by others.
