On CD Quality…
By Bryan Geyer Bob Widlar, the Genesis When partners Sony and Philips initially teamed to develop the compact disc (1979) and the first CDs came to market (in early 1983, in the U.S.), the unveiling was widely hailed as the arrival of “perfect sound forever”. That infamous quote has long been derided by persistent doubters, and there have been plenty of hiccups en route, but much of the best unbiased opinion of today concludes that the Sony/Philips claim was effectively prescient, although premature. Assuming good playback mechanics and modern decoding technology, standard Red Book CDs are now aurally indistinguishable from the finest high resolution means of digital recording extant. While a select set of audiophiles might still dispute that opinion, and contend that some favored hi-rez digital streaming process presents audible advantage, their collective criticism has shriveled. Today, with obviously increasing consistency, dedicated […]

Sound is what matters most in classical music
What matters most in a classical performance, whether in concert or recorded, is not the age of the audience, the hype surrounding the musicians, the gender of the conductor, the number of Facebook 'likes', the backstory of the composer, or the many other next big things manufactured by the marketeers. What matters most is the quality of sound, which must pass a threshold of acceptability for the message of the composer and performers to be effectively communicated to the audience. The rishis who composed the Vedic Hymns nailed it when they declared nada brahma - sound is god (Shatpatha Brahmana X.20.43). The overriding importance of sound is recognised in the search for the perfect concert hall. The results of this obsessive search include the 'acoustically' perfect' Elbphilharmonie - or perhaps not so perfect. It also triggered Simon Rattle's demand that the perfectly serviceable Barbican Hall in London should be […]

Australia defunds 20 music organisations
Music Australia, which tours music to schools across the vast continent, appears to be the main casualty of the government-ordered cull. Successful music applicants for 4-year funding from the Australia Council are: the Australian Art Orchestra, the Australian Music Centre, the Australian String Quartet, CAAMA, Ensemble Offspring, Liquid Architecture, Queensland Music Network, the Song Company, Sound Alliance, Speak Percussion, Tura New Music and Victorian Opera. Defunded organisiations include the Australian Festival of Chamber Music, Gondwana Choirs, Music Council, Pro Musica (Canberra international Music Festival), Southern Cross Soloists, Synergy/Taikoz, Topology, Wangaratta Jazz Festival and WA Youth Jazz Orchestra. Music Australia CEO Chris Bowen said: “It is clear the budget decision made a year ago by the then Federal Arts Minister is a key factor in the results announced today. This will see over 20 music and performing arts companies defunded. This will reduce our creative output, jobs, and opportunities for […]

I found this great shot on flickr. In some ways the constraints of my professional and academic life have left me repressed creatively. At the core of my being I’m an artist. Likely a reflection of the creative Spirit that resides within me. Although there are creative similarities that exist in the problem solving, project management, and systems analysis aspects of technical work, they differ in respect to the traditional arts; like drawing and painting. For example, it’s difficult to find a true expression of oneself in the logical Topology of a network. Emotion and self awareness become subdued during the systems design process. Efficiency and value are the cornerstones of the bottom line. This is the key difference between the technical work done behind the corporate curtain, and that performed by weekend hobbyist in cargos. When I left the Army in 2008 I went through an exploratory phase […]
