Since 2009, inmates at the Czech Republic's Odolov Prison have been learning to repair violins, violas, and cellos, and now, to make new instruments from scratch. The scheme is the brainchild of prison guard Pavel Staněk, who was formerly a cellist in the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Alexis Ffrench at the Cafe de Paris
Alexis Ffrench at the Cafe de Paris (photo David Nelson) I have to confess that until last week, I had never been to London's Cafe de Paris (a nightclub which opened in 1924 and has managed to feature artists as varied as Louise Brooks, Marlene Dietrich, and Noel Coward to name but a few). But last Tuesday this was the elegant venue for the launch of pianist Alexis Ffrench's new disc Evolution, his first disc since being signed to Sony. Ffrench is a fascinating musician, he trained at The Purcell School, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Royal Academy of Music, but he is also loves rap, R&B and roots music, and can write a good tune. His new disc features guests as varied as classical harpist Lavinia Meijer and Boston-based electro folk duo Tall Heights, and The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Adam […]

The kind of music that transcends and breaks […]

to be played at: Balenciaga for the girl: who is “like John Rambo meets Polly Pocket; Dakota Fanning crossed with Death Wish 4.” – Mark Millar, Kick-Ass. mood: The initial inspiration was the word “EPIC.” I focused on two songs, “Once Upon a Time in China” by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and “The Imperial March” from “The Empire Strikes Back” by John Williams. It led me to explore scores from movie soundtracks. With the help of a music extraordinaire and the archives of the sound stylist, Javier Peral, the grandiose songs and positive feel good songs, created a playlist, perfect for a model like Hope Bowers, to march down the runway in Balenciaga gear. playlist (1 hour, 1 minute): Once Upon a Time in China – The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, Jason Wu FW 2012 2080 – Yeasayer, Max Mara FW 2009 Princess of China – Coldplay ft.
