Aimard/RSB/Popelka - Schoenberg and Mahler, 9 March 2024
PhilharmonieSchoenberg: Piano Concerto, op.42 Mahler: Symphony no.1 Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano)Berlin Radio Symphony OrchestraPetr Popelka (conductor)Images: Peter MeiselThe world’s near-silence for Schoenberg’s anniversary year continues to deafen. Perhaps everywhere is waiting for September, when his birthday falls, and all will be revealed in a flurry of ‘new season’ announcements. And perhaps eternal Friede will descend upon the Erde this Christmas. In the meantime, Berlin, mostly at the Philharmonie, where there is an exhibition from the Arnold Schönberg Center in the foyer, continues to do better than most. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who is certainly doing his bit, joined the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB) and Petr Popelka for an outstanding performance of the Piano Concerto, probably the best I have heard live—and a match for the best on record. The Royal Philharmonic Society Awards 2024, at the Royal Northern College of Music
L-R from top: Nicky Spence; Jasdeep Singh Degun; Roman Grigoriv, Olga Diatel and Illia Razumeiko; and Jack Capstaff at the RPS AwardsThe Royal Philharmonic Society held its awards ceremony at the Royal Northern College of Music on Tuesday night (5 March) – the first time they’ve ever done them out of London. And here are my awards for the highlights of the show: l The ceremony began with Conversation in the Forest by Keiko Abe, performed by “The Sound of Manchester” – Delia Stevens and Le Yu (aka Aurora Percussion Duo), with Andrea Vogler, David Hext, Harriet Kwong and Paul Patrick. l Most entertaining acceptance speech of the night was from tenor Nicky Spence (winner, Singer category), pointing out that he’d been up for the award more than once before and “I was beginning to think I was Pippa Middleton” and telling the tale of how his […]

There is no right reaction to great music
Quite justifiably the adventurous Matangi Quartet from the Netherlands received acclaim for their recent recording of quartets by Silvestrov, Schnittke, and Shostakovich. But their 2022 ECM disc of Ruins and Remains, a suite for piano, string quartet and percussion composed by Wolfert Breferode slipped under the media radar, probably because in the meaningless ontology of music genres it is pigeonholed as 'jazz'. Composer Wolfert Breferode again defies those meaningless pigeonholes: he studied classical and jazz piano at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague before establishing a formidable reputation as a leading Dutch jazz pianist and recording four albums for ECM.Ruins and Remains was composed by Wolfert Breferode in 2018 in response to a commission to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Since the premiere however the work has evolved to embrace a wider perspective on human frailty, helped by the improvisatory experiments of the Matangi Quartet and […]
