As an amateur violinist I was a member of several orchestras that included the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra and the San Jose Symphony. There is no better way to become connected to a wonderful composition than to learn and rehearse it, and finally perform it… The sketch for the Schumann C-major Symphony took less than a week’s effort, but its completion, delayed by Schumann’s bouts of failing health and, worse, poor self-confidence, took nearly a year. One of the great Blessings in my life has been the fact that I learned to play violin at age 7. Much later, once I acquired some skills, was able to join several orchestras. I was 14 when I was accepted into a community orchestra in Brooklyn, New York. Members included doctors and other professional people. The conductor was the former first Oboe player under Arturo Toscanini. I learned a lot of the orchestral repertoire at the Brooklyn group, and later also at the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra and the San Jose Symphony. One of my great favorites became the second
