Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival on BBC Radio 3's New Music Show
The Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival has been running from 18 to 22 November 2021 across venues in Huddersfield. For those that have not managed to get to Huddersfield this year, the festival is continuing its long-standing partnership with BBC Radio 3 and its New Music Show. Radio 3's weekly programme devoted to contemporary and experimental music, New Music Show, recorded nine concerts from the festival and there are two New Music Shows devoted to highlights from the festival, to be broadcast on Saturday, November 27 and Saturday, December 4 at 10pm. These will mix performances with interviews with composers and performers. These two programmes will feature music by Chaya Czernowin, James Dillon, Jenny Hettne, Tonya Ko, Zubin Kanga, Lisa Illean, and Michael Pelzel, performed by Riot Ensemble, Red Note Ensemble, London Sinfonietta, Arditti Quartet and Ensemble Musikfabrik. Various venues, HuddersfieldHuddersfield contemporary music festival’s second day featured new and contrasting music by James Dillon, Chaya Czernowin and Enno Poppe Restricted to a virtual festival last year, the Huddersfield contemporary music festival has returned in-person to present their trademark boundary-pushing programme over a weekend. The second part of James Dillon’s protracted 70th birthday celebrations provided the focal point for Friday’s lunchtime concert. Dillon has long been a mainstay of Huddersfield programmes, giving festival audiences opportunities to hear the twists and turns of an elusive composing career mostly forged abroad. Emblemata: Carnival, receiving its official world premiere, saw Dillon far removed from the “new complexity” label often attached to his music. Shrouded in darkness, enclosed by speakers and featuring the composer seated behind the sound desk, an interleaved mesh of lightly pulsing soundscapes, bursting instrumental lines and darting manipulated echoes followed. Red Note Ensemble's Autumn season represents a step in their plans to create a permanent, stable company of musicians rooted within Scotland
Red Note Ensemble (Photo Julie Howden) The Scottish Contemporary Music group, Red Note Ensemble, performs at Perth Concert Hall tonight (24 September 2021) when Geoffrey Patterson conducts them in a new work by Scottish composer James Dillon, EMBLEMATA: Carnival, and the performance (which includes discussion about this impressive commission) follows three days of recording two works by Dillon for Delphian Records.The ensemble has already been performing other music by Dillon this month as they launched their Autumn season with a concert at the Lammermuir Festival on 15 September 2021 in which Jonathan Berman conducted Tansy Davies' Soul Canoe and Dillon's Tanz/Haus: triptych 2017, Red Note's own commission which won the the Royal Philharmonic Society composition award.
