[…] Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) is now best known for his many sacred works, of which his Requiem (1896) is one of the most memorable. Beecham was a steadfast champion of this sprawling work, which displays Stanford’s characteristic gift for melody. Eschewing the histrionics of some of the other works mentioned here, this subtle requiem rewards close listening. It has been recorded for Naxos by Adrien Leaper and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland with the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir. OK, so this one’s a bit of a cheat, since it’s certainly not a mass, or even a pseudo-mass, but as a sombrely beautiful memorial for the dead, Pour les funérailles d’un Soldat (1912), by the reliably outstanding Lili Boulanger (1893-1918) is a match for any of the above, note for note.
