Getting opera around England has, over my lifetime, been through a massive number of reinventions. Fom Britten's English Opera Group through the arts Council's Opera for All, Phoenix Opera, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Opera 80, the Opera Group, not to mention the touring activities of Sadlers Wells Opera, and the regional companies such as Welsh National Opera, Scottish Opera and Opera North, there has been a huge effort to get opera to the furthest corners of the realm. I am speaking of the period of my consciousness of such things - 1950 to the present day. I was pretty closely involved in all this from the mid-1960s for more than 20 years.
