Claude Debussy: La Mer – Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Fabien Gabel (HD 1080p)
Under the baton of the French conductor Fabien Gabel, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs Claude Debussy's La Mer. Recorded at Orchestra Hall, Max M. Fisher Music Center, Detroit, in November 2015.✻Claude Debussy's rich and evocative depiction of the underwater realm remains an impressionistic milestone, a classic of its type. But what makes La Mer so good?Ever-resistant to the confines of normal practice, impressionist composer Claude Debussy insisted that his La Mer was not a symphony. No, even though it contains three symphonic movements that could quite happily be classified as a symphony. Debussy preferred to call it a set of "symphonic sketches" – something of a milestone in itself.La Mer (literally "The Sea") was a confusing prospect to audiences of 1905, as it was neither a normal symphony nor a complete departure. Parisian audiences initially didn't really warm to it either, perhaps partly because of the scandal of Debussy having left […]

Antonín Dvořák: Symphony No.8 in G major – Orchestre National de France, Emmanuel Krivine (HD 1080p)
Emmanuel Krivine conducts the Orchestre National de France in Antonín Dvořák's Symphony No.8 in G major, Op.88, a work rollicking character inspired by the folk music of Bohemia. The concert was recorded at Maison de la Radio, Paris, on October 18, 2018. ✻Antonín Dvořák had been embarrassed when mature works were issued as early ones, while his nationalism had been offended by the persistent Germanizing of his first name as "Anton". In 1889, no longer a naïf provincial, Dvořák chose to interpret the offer of 1,000 Deutschmarks – 5,000 less than he had paid for the instantly popular Seventh – as publisher Fritz Simrock's first right of refusal, and sold his new Eighth to the British firm of Novello, who published it as No.4. Novello considered it a privilege to buy the work; Simrock never repeated his mistake. When Cambridge University honored Dvořák as a Doctor of Music in 1892, he submitted the Eighth Symphony […]

César Franck: Le Chasseur maudit | Henri Dutilleux: Tout un monde lointain... | Claude Debussy: Nocturnes | Maurice Ravel: La Valse – Nicolas Altstaedt, University of Michigan Choral Union, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Fabien Gabel – Sunday, April 29, 2018, 03:00 PM EDT (GMT-4) – Livestream
Nicolas Altstaedt (Photo by Alescha Birkenholz) French artists were masters in capturing the essence of a subject through suggestion and atmosphere – a trait not only found in visual arts and literature, but also through the music of French composers. The music of Franck, Debussy, Ravel, and Dutilleux conjures visions of distant worlds, the spirit of the hunt, the playfulness of natural light, and the soul of the dance in a program spanning a century of French impressionism. The award-winning German-French cellist Nicolas Altstaedt (b. 1982) performs Henri Dutilleux's Tout un monde lointain...
