This was so good though that I thought I better say something about it. This was the latest in an ongoing stroll through the best choirs that pop up in London with LAC who knows where he is at with this sort of caper. Any sensible consumer of classical music will likely eventually conclude that the most versatile and approachable instrument of all is the human voice, with a smallish choir the optimal way to hear it. And the genius composers of the past for such limited, but pure, forces, the likes of Taverner, Tallis, […]

The concert season of 2014/15 in Arnhem
[…] as good as the late Alicia de Larrocha, as far as we are concerned. Sadly, we cannot point to much else for excitement on the whole program for the Musis Sacrum next season. There are the usual Dutch fixtures of concerts of Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, and first Telemann on the “Oude Muziek” series, but we do not know much about the performers at all. The same hold for the “Kamermuziek” series. We wouldn’t call the Nederlands Kamerkoor, or the Amsterdam Sinfonietta exactly outstanding international successes. In their programmes (three concerts by each), there are pieces that promise something interesting, if one holds quite modern English, Scandinavian or American religious choral music, or Russian and English chamber music in high esteem. But we would not consider the likes of Ravel’s La Valse, or the Carnaval des animaux as something we would stand in long queues for. We sorely miss any interesting […]

The music season in Arnhem's Musis Sacrum in 2013/14
[…] credit: Wikipedia) As the Netherlands is to a large extent the land of ‘old music’, we can expect a number of notable concerts in music before romanticism. Händel’s Messiah is performed by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra on 7th December, with Ton Koopman as conductor. On February 7th, the English tenor Ian Bostridge gives a full concert of songs by John Dowland, in memory of the 450th birthday of the great English Reneissance composer. The Nederlands Kamerkoor gives a concert of Josquin des Prez, Orlando de Lasso en Antoine Brummel on 18th February, but the biggest even is expected on 19th April, when Frans Brüggen‘s orchestra, the Orchestra of the 18th Century, and the Cappella Amsterdam performs Bach’s Johannes Passion . Our guess is, that tickets for this concert are already hard to buy, as information has been available locally for several weeks now. Midori There are two […]
