One of the ways that Eleanor's work has featured in the blog over the last few years is in her pieces for families and young people, such as her Roald Dahl setting, Snow White and her recent Trumpet Concerto - Invocation for the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. Writing such pieces does indeed interest her greatly, but it is in fact only one aspect of her composing career. As with many composers, she wrote the works because she was asked to. Invocation: London Schools Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 70th birthday with new trumpet concerto from Eleanor Alberga
Eleanor Alberga (Photo Benjamin Ealovega) The London Schools Symphony Orchestra will be celebrating its 70th anniversary later this year with a concert at the Barbican Centre on 20 September 2021 which will include the world premiere of Eleanor Alberga’s new trumpet concerto, based on Caribbean and Latin American folk legends. Peter Ash will conduct the orchestra in a programme which includes Debussy’s Prelude à l’après-midi d’un faune and Stravinsky’s Petrushka alongside Alberga's new concerto Invocation performed by trumpeter Pacho Flores. The orchestra has built a close relationship with Alberga, recently celebrating her 70th birthday with a staged performance of her orchestral showpiece Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Invocation was originally planned with dance choreography by Colombian dancer Fernando Montaño, one of the stars of the Royal Ballet, but sadly the orchestra’s summer tour of Colombia had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. LSSO Alive!
London Schools Symphony Orchestra In the absence of live concerts, the London Schools Symphony Orchestra is making concerts available from its archive. Starting next week, each Monday the LSSO will upload a full length concert to their Facebook page. On Monday 27 April 2020, Music from the Dark Side explores interpretations of Faust with music by Penderecki, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Berlioz and Schnittke's Faust Cantata, conducted by Sian Edwards with narrator Dame Janet Suzman, mezzo-soprano Fiona Kimm, soloists from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the LSSO Chorus (recorded on 8 January 2020). Then on Monday 4 May 2020, Holst's The Planets and Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 conducted by Sir Richard Armstrong with soprano Louise Alder (recorded 9 January 2018).In 2021, the orchestra will be celebrating its 70th anniversary and would love to hear from alumni, contact the LSSO via their Facebook page.

Samling Artist Showcase at Wigmore Hall
The Samling Artist Showcase at Wigmore Hall takes place on Friday 8 November 2019, an annual recital highlighting the young artists supported by the Samling Institute for Young Artists. This year the performers are soprano Claire Lees (Samling Artist 2017, Oscar in Opera Holland Park's 2019 Young Artist performance of Un ballo in maschera), mezzo-soprano Anna Stephany (Samling Artist 2005, last seen in Mendelssohn's Elijah with the OAE), tenor Filipe Manu (Samling Artist 2018, whom we saw in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra) and baritone Dominic Sedgwick (Samling Artist 2017, currently a Jette Parker Young Artist at Covent Garden), accompanied by pianists Joseph Middleton and Somi Kim. They will be joined by the actor Sir Simon Russell Beale for a programme entitled Come into the Garden, with a variety of garden themed songs from Schumann and Wolf to Britten and Walton.There are unusual items and novelties too, […]
