Wieland/Schmid/Vitzthum/Schoch/Junge Kantorei/Frankfurt Baroque O/Martini Naxos (three CDs) In comparison to Peter Sellars' production of Theodora for Glyndebourne in 1996, this Naxos set, the latest in a series of Handel oratorios with conductor Joachim Carlos Martini and the Frankfurt Baroque Orchestra, seems stylish enough but just a little bit dull. As in the Glyndebourne recording, it's the singer in the role of Irene, the mezzo Diana Schmid, who attracts most attention, with the generosity of her phrasing and warm even tone. The soprano Christina Wieland singing Theodora is rather pallid and tremulous, the counter tenor Didymus (Franz Vitzthum) merely efficient. Martini steers the works smoothly, but a quick comparison with William Christie's vital contribution to the Glyndebourne performance shows what's lacking.Rating: 3/5George Frideric HandelClassical musicAndrew Clementsguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
