6 Days and Counting to Phoenix Ignition
Concert or barbecue? The birth of an ensemble is hardly rare in this cultural mecca, but it’s not every week, or every year even, that we get to be present for the birth of a new orchestra. Apparently, we’re all invited to get to know the 30 musicians of Phoenix Orchestra in a social setting of 120 seats—mostly at tables with tinkling glasses—“and experience the launch of a new kind of concert! There’ll be fantastic music, great drinks, and lots of chances to meet the players behind the stands.” Conductor/President Matthew Szymanski has fashioned an ensemble of post-conservatory freelancers (10 of whom come from the late lamented Discovery Ensemble) who will debut with serious repertoire and low-set hurdles at Club Oberon on March 24th. Breaking: US chamber orchestra shuts down
Lawrence Johnson has news of the closure of Boston’s Discovery Ensemble. Founded in 2008 by the young British conductor Courtney Lewis and a musicologist, David St George, it aimed to draw high school and university students into playing in a classical orchestra. Unfortunately, there weren’t enough donors around to sustain it. And Courtney’s gone on to greater things . Read Larry’s story here.

Remember My Name: Courtney Lewis To the New York Philharmonic
Nice to see 29-year old Courtney Lewis of the terrific Boston chamber orchestra Discovery Ensemble get an appointment as the Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic. Seeing the Belfast-born Courtney in action – in our WGBH Fraser Performance Studio, in live concerts, and in interviews – I’m convinced he’s a great talent, and a genuine Good Guy to boot. It seems the NY Phil Music Director Alan Gilbert “We discovered Courtney Lewis after an extensive audition process, and he emerged as a very promising future colleague as our next Assistant Conductor,” - Bravo, Courtney, and good luck in New York! You can read the entire press release here. And click here to hear Courtney lead the band in their season-opening live broadcast concert from October 2012.

Juxtaposing traditional works with more recent music is a credo of Discovery Ensemble, this program being yet another brilliant realization of that goal. On Friday evening, the hottest ticket in town was — or should have been — the latest program from this group, at Jordan Hall. Music Director Courtney Lewis was back at what he does best, delivering a program thoughtfully conceived, meticulously rehearsed, and memorable and dynamic in execution. (Another less visible but admirable aspect of their program is reaching out to Boston children through the offering of these programs in local schools.) The contrasts in dynamics which characterize the Beethoven “Leonore” Overture were great fodder for Maestro Lewis, who appears obviously to enjoy turning his group on a dime and also utilizing silence to heighten dramatic utterance. His youthful energy and surprisingly mature perceptions of the music combine to create a unique blend of light and dark, fire […]
