Steven Lipsitt (file photo) The Boston Civic Symphony concert in Jordan Hall Sunday afternoon, under the direction of Steven Lipsitt, was one to remember, although it took a while to sink in. The orchestra responded well to Lipsitt’s fluid gestures, especially in sections with quickly contrasting meters, and presented a gentle approach to dissonance; the balance of woodwind and string sections was one of the best I’ve heard in Jordan Hall, where the violins often swamp the winds and percussion. (Lipsitt is a candidate for the BCS directorship; he served as music director of Boston Classical Orchestra for 17 years and appeared last week in Sanders Theater as guest conductor / applicant with Masterworks Chorale .) A diverse program of Weber, Ginastera, and Brahms delighted the audience, and Executive Director Michele Mortensen’s introduction provided context for the BCS’s second concert of the season. The highlight of the performance was a […]

Masterworks Chorale from Bach to Rorem

With wide experience (clarinet, voice, composition, improvisation) and double conducting degrees from Yale (choral and orchestral), he offers a wealth of musical knowledge. Currently he is artistic director of VOICES Boston (formerly PALS Children’s Chorus), conductor of the Apollo Club, director of A Besere Velt, and now founding music director of the Bach, Beethoven & Brahms Society (the phoenix arising from the ashes of the Boston Classical Orchestra. According to the former orchestra’s timpanist, Dennis Sullivan, almost all of the orchestra members [would] be joining BB&B. A seemingly reliable discussion of the transition is here . On the beautiful, late-summer afternoon, it heartened me to see a substantial audience gather. Certainly, many find music a moving and healing means of observing a tragic anniversary, but I suspect there were also many who wished to hear three very familiar masterpieces and see a brilliant young violinist about to take the music world by storm. Johann Sebastian Bach’s Air from Orchestral Suite […]

Boston Classical Orchestra To Close (New Orchestra Rises)
“Small ensembles like BCO face an uphill battle in Boston’s crowded musical ecosystem, especially as institutional funding falls far beneath the levels present in other cities. Still, as Boston loses one ensemble, it will be gaining another.”
