Classical music at this year's Bath Festival
[…] Boy Does Fine.Peter Manning and the Bath Festival Orchestra are exploring the sea, with an imaginative programme of music by Takemitsu (from Japan), Daniel Temkin (from the USA), Grace Williams (from Wales), and Joey Roukens (from the Netherlands). Trumpeter Aaron Akugbo joins organist John Kitchin at Bath Abbey for a programme which moves between Bach and Telemann to Messiaen, McDowall and more. Horn player Ben Goldscheider and trumpeter Matilda Lloyd join Jason Thornton and the Bath Philharmonia for a programme that includes concertos by Mozart and Haydn, plus Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man and Janacek's Sinfonietta. These latter two will feature the combined forces of the Bath Philharmonia and the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music. Should be thrilling stuff! As ABO's Sirens Fund awards 2020 funding to seven orchestras, applications open for fifth round of funding
Anna Amalia von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach The Association of British Orchestra's (ABO) Sirens Fund was founded by Diane Ambache in 2016 to support for projects to raise the awareness and appreciation of music written by historic women composers from around the world. For the 2020 round, seven orchestras have received funding including Bath Philharmonia, Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia and Ulster Orchestra who will give performances of music by Grazyna Bacewicz (1909-1969), Anna Amalia von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1739-1807), Amy Beach (1867-1944), Helena Munktell (1852-1919), Clara Schumann(1819-1896), Grace Williams (1906-1977) and Elizabeth Maconchy (1907-1994). Bath Festival 2020
[…] spaces between Wagner's Wesendonck Songs with mezzo-soprano Susan Bickley, baritone Matthew Brook and actor Victoria Newlyn. Whilst Iford Arts brings its production Lehar's The Merry Widow conducted by Oliver Gooch, directed by Simon Butteriss with Maire Flavin and James McOran Campbell. Conductor Charles Hazelwood will lead the Paraorchestra, an integrated orchestra of disabled and non-disabled musicians, with soprano Victoria Oruwari in a performance of Gorecki's Sorrowful Songs beside the waters of the Roman Baths. The Bath Philharmonia is joined by the Band of the Royal Marines, conducted by Jason Thornton in Copland, Mozart, Janacek, Haydn and Tchaikovsky. Other performers include the Gesualdo Six, pianist Bertrande Chamayou, pianist Tom Poster, and the Heath Quartet play Beethoven quartets across three concerts.
